Can the others shoot? Just wondering for LR squadron shenanigans, one pops smoke, the other shoots, they both get cover.

I would say yes, the other vehicles in the squadron can shoot, BUT, they do not benefit from cover of the one who popped smoke. You are still a vehicle, regardless of being in a squadron, and you either shoot or pop smoke.

Also, vehicles are large so one smoke canister would be insufficient to cover all three (or more) vehicles.

Yes, the other vehicles in the squadron will be able to shoot.

If more than half of the vehicles are in cover then every vehicle in the squadron gets the save (as per the rules for normal units as referenced by the squadron rules.) So if a pair of vehicles has one pop smoke both will be obscured, but if there are three and one pops smoke none will get a save.

I'm inclined to think the squadron would have to choose to pop smoke or shoot

I would agree with Chrysis. You can have, along this line of reasoning, 2 vehicles in a squadron of 3 pop smoke, and the last one being able to shoot.

Agree?

That's a nice thought but it's not correct according to the rules. A squadron can do both, and as Chrysis pointed out, if half or more of the squadron counts as concealed the whole squadron gets a cover save. This lets squadrons of two vehicles benefit from concealment while half of it shoots.

Yes, with the trade off being that when the last one pops smoke nothing happens (no one gets a save) because less than half is in cover. Assuming the other two haven't found some actual cover of course.

I'm not sure that's right following the rules for shooting at squadrons. after allocation, "use the rules for vehicles in cover (ignoring other members of the squadron)" BGB page 64 right half, second paragraph

looks like only the one who popped smoke will gain cover

You're missing the rest of that sentence "and then the rules for normal units to work out if the entire squadron is in cover or not."

If 1 of 2 is in cover then they all get a save by the normal unit rules, if 1 of 3 is in cover none of them do by the same criteria. You use the rules for vehicles for each member (50% LoS block, etc) and then apply the unit rules which would take away individual members cover saves if the whole unit doesn't qualify.

jdjamesdean, you've gotten the meaning backward by cutting off the rest of that paragraph.

You ignore the other members of the squadron for determining LOS for cover. Ie: One member of the squad does not grant cover to another by physically hiding it. The paragraph then goes on to say that you determine the squad's cover saves by using the normal rules for units to determine whether the squadron has cover or not.

Chrysis is correct; if you have a squadron of two vehicles, you can have one pop smoke and the other fire on a given turn, and they both get cover saves.

Actually, that's half or more - very important distinction for 2 vehicle squadrons.

There is absolutely nothing to support that.

There was an article on the old GW US Site that showed GWs position on Squadrons and Smoke(It, surprisingly, followed the RAW).

When you have a squadron of 2 vehicles you can pop smoke with 1 vehicle, while firing with the second. After the Players turn that Squadron is considered to be obscured because at least 50% of the unit is obscured.

This is my Rulebook. There are many Like it, but this one is mine. Without me, my rulebook is useless. Without my rulebook, I am useless.

As an aside, this also lets you checkerboard tanks so both units would be eligable for cover. With the new faq changes you are probably not able to do it but I dont remember if they only refrence infantry units or not.
