I think the majority of those who pre-ordered were expecting/hoping for it to arrive today. I know I was.

30 minutes to go until business day closing (London time is ~4:30pm) and still no word of shipping confirmation emails being sent... I'll let everyone draw their own conclusions.

Just received this mail from codex pictures

Unfortunately, due to a production issue outside of our control, we are not able to start shipping your order for the ULTRAMARINES DVD Collector's Set today, November 29th as planned. We are working around the clock with our third party suppliers to resolve the issue as soon as possible and hope to be able to give you details of a new ship date tomorrow.

We at Codex Pictures know you will be very disappointed not to receive your DVD as soon as anticipated and are equally distressed ourselves that this has happened.

Please accept our sincere apologies and rest assured we are doing everything we can to resolve the issue and get your order to you quickly.

Hmmm. Well, here's a silver lining: Having tried to put out a 40K movie on their own (okay, with an apparently under-resourced partner) and created what looks like mediocre videogame cut-scene footage, perhaps GW will begin thinking about a future partnership with someone actually competent to create a Hollywood-quality film. It's kind of painful to see a visually well-developed IP (with a gigantic existing fanbase) shoved into such a terrible format.

Bluescreen would have been so much better for the character motion...

Infinity: Way, way better than 40K and more affordable to boot!

Apart from the fact it wasn't GW trying to put it out...

Annoys me how it's taken them until gone 8pm on the day pre-orders were supposed to have actually been delivered to have realised they weren't going to be able to start shipping them...

Games workshop have been approached by hollywood etc, and this "Terrible format" were the only company in YEARS to put a movie offer forward that stuck so closely to there (gws) idea of a 40k film. I belive i read somwhere that one of the larger companys wanted to put in a space marine love element. : /

I was looking forward to this, but after checking out the clip... i think I may pass. Voice acting sounds top notch, script may be pretty good too (a nice touch with the apothacary checking the dead marines for gene seed), by the CGI left me cold. They should of hired the guys that did DoW2, the cuts scenes in that was great. Not sure I want to pay double the amount for a blu-ray for this. I think I'll wait a few months and see how many pop up on ebay. Sorry GW, but you guys should of spent a few more bucks on the CGI department.

Please check out my review here for my thoughts on that concept.

I think you've got it totally backwards. GW's fanbase is NOT gigantic, it is niche. hardcore sci-fi fantatics are niche and 40K is a tiny subset of that pie.

Believe me, Hollywood is desperate for any good idea to make a movie from, if they thought GW's universe was profitable there already would have been a movie made.

The reality is, good animation costs way, way more then any 40K movie could ever hope to make back...so you need to let that idea go as any company that made such a movie would be instantly bankrupting themselves.

The Ultramarines movie is a solid *LITTLE* indy-animation piece that does a pretty good job of catering to the 40K universe and as such you should pick it up. Because like I say in my review, if this movie doesn't sell you certainly aren't going to see someone else jump in to make a movie on a property that doesn't sell DVDs.

I recall back in the early 90's (92 I think). I was at GenCon (back when it was still in Milwaukee), at the GW stand, and they had a video playing of a live action movie which had space marines, CSM, Orks, and I recall a particularly large Tyranid warrior (there may have been genestealers too, can't remember). I asked the guys at the booth what it was from, and they said that they were short films that GW had made themselves to show to movie studios to try and get them interesting in doing films about their properties. Not sure what ever happened to these films (I've looked for them on Youtube, but I've never found them).

I have to agree that the animation in the ultramarines movie doesn't look so amazing, especially compared to something from Pixar, dreamworks, or Blur (the guys who did the CG intro to DoW). It reminds me a lot of stuff from the 90's done for TV (beastwars, reboot, etc). And just from that small clip they showed, it seemed like no one was moving, and they were trying to extend the shots with no actual animation as long as possible. Kind of a sad debut for a 40k movie, but as was mentioned, what did we really expect.

Most animated studios won't touch something that would have a PG-13 or higher rating, and I don't think you could do 40k justice without it. If this is really something that's true to the 40k background (which I'm guessing it is), that in itself is pretty special. And, however much you dislike it, if everyone buys it, it will really get the big studio's attention. As an example, back in the 80's there was an animated xmen cartoon (the one where wolverine had an Australian accent), it was a one off, pretty poorly done attempt. Then in the early nineties we got the animated series, also terribly animated, but HUGELY popular. Then later we got the awesome Brian Singer live action films, and we won't discuss what's happened since then, but you can see where I"m going. This is a stepping point for GW, and as the property gains streangth in the general market, GW can hold onto the reins of the property better. Sometimes jumping into a big budget live action movie isn't the answer (have you seen the D&D movie? Super Mario Brothers Movie?). We should all just be patient and go with the flow. If the film does well, the studio might hire more animators, and do an ever bigger sequel!
