I was playing a game of 40k and was unsure on what to do in this following situation?:

I had my platoon of terminators and my captain who had joined them. They all shot at the enemy in the shooting phase. When it came to the assault phase the terminators could assault as they have strom bolters which are assault weapons...but the captain could not as he fired his rapid fire wapon which has the rule that he cannot assault after fireing.

Question: Are the terminators allowed to assault and the captain just follows them in to the assault but he just holds back as he cannot assault?

OR Are the terminators all unable to assault due to the captain not being able to assault as he is part of the squad in this scenario?

INFACT the same question for a normal platton of space marines with rapid fire weapons...if some fore and some do not within the same sqaud, can the ones who didn't fire still assault with the one who did fire following behind but not assaulting?

Assuming you have a power armoured Captain, then you CANNOT assault as the unit has models without the relentless rule that fired Rapid fire weapons (the captain)

Assuming your captain had a Bolt Pistol he should have fired that or not fired at all, OR seperated from the terminators such that they were 2 units in the movement phase.

FOr your second question - see my answer above. The decision is whether the UNIT can assault, not which models - if some models in the unit cannot assault, none can.

So if you have ANY models in the squad that are disqualified from assaulting, i.e. fired heavy weapons, rapid fired (without relentless), the unit is prohibited from making an assault move that turn.

He was a normal captain with bolt gun and power sword. NOT a Vet Sgt.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
so basically, even one guy who cannot assault because he fired, stops all others from assaulting EVEN IF the rest have ASSAULT weapons, they are ALL PROHIBITED...is that correct?

Yes, that is correct, as the UNIT assaults, NOT individual models.

One model being unable to assault stops the unit from assaulting.

Thats why it's (usually, not always) best to have marine IC's with at least a BP and a CCW.

Or just dont fire the bolter.

2 S4 shots versus assaulting? Not worth it.

I'm a bit hazy on the rules but can the squad and character seperate as part of the assault move? Or can joining/leaving units only happen during the movement phase?

But yes, in this situation, no assaulty.

Stephens City, VA

just give the IC a BP+PW that way he can get +1 attack for having 2 ccw
