This is a good representation of a bolt round. The main difference being this is fired by a propellant charge in the casing instead of an internal rocket motor. I remember the army working on the OICW 5 or 6 years ago with the same system, as well as a fairly normal 5.56 mm carbine included.

Oh thank god. I was worried this was going to be another AA-12 = Boltgun thread.

This is hardly new news to those in small arms circles, and certainly not gaming news, since your average hobbyist isn't going to be able to get his hands on a grenade launcher.

That said, you're right. This is probably the closest thing humanity has right now to a boltgun. Just get some mobile power armor, FTL space flight, and we'll be ready to launch the Great Crusade.

Round is more like the Heavy Bolter's round a normal Bolter would fire a projectile around the size of a 12 gauge Slug. Though its been previously mentioned the XM25 has been around for quite some time now, it was the Grenade Launcher part of the XM24 OICW.

Also this is not news, this should be in 40k discussions, or OT.

It wouldn't be that hard to make a real bolter, true to the design and effectiveness. Expensive, impractical, but possible.

It "sounds realistic" because it's actually real. They just got deployed to Iraq in large numbers this month.

Given the nastiness of some gamers, I certainly hope not.

In all fairness a bolter is .75cal, which is 19.05mm, a 12ga shotgun is .73in or 18.5mm. So the comparison on a calibre basis is not far off. A bolt-gun is smoothbore just like a shotgun, so the comparison of the "gun" part is reasonable. There are many reason why they are unlike, such as rocket motor and guidance, but in many of the ways people compare firearms there are similarities.

I've done work on the ammunition programs of both of these weapons, and the cost down version is my next project. Also the image of that 25mm round is long out of date. Thats more of an early artist rendition.

I'm not saying that the AA-12 isn't like a bolter, especially when loaded with micro-grenades, but people have been saying that for a while now. Personally I think both platforms are like boltguns, being able to fire smallish explosives at full or semi automatic rates of fire.
