Hi is Battlefleet Gothic any good? I'm considering starting playing but i'm not entirely sure if I like the models that much. Any comments will be much appreciated. Thanks

Luckily the models don't mean much in BFG; There are few if any official GW events for it and the rules themselves tell you that they're just for show, really (the scale is WAY wrong).

On the rules themselves: it's the best ruleset in GW's lineup IMHO. Since it's all free on their website( http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/content/article.jsp?catId=cat480005a&categoryId=1100007§ion=&aId=4300022 ) you can do what my friends and I did: cut out paper circles, draw two lines on em at 90 degree angles (for facings) put a dot in the center (to represent the post on the base) and play some test games. If you like the rules but hate the minis, then just use whatever spaceship minis you like as long as it's clear which ship is which. Have fun!

Here are some alternate ships: http://www.star-ranger.com/Minis.htm

Also check here for other stuff, tips, tactica, paintjobs:

Well apparently, Portmaw is down temporarily... damn.

I always thought the models to be a bit dodgy but you have proven me wrong Horizon! What army has the most tactical flexibility

Chaos & Imperial Navy.

The new Tau Kor'or'Vesh (draft 2010) will also have flexible options.

Orks to a large extend as well.

Did I say they weren't? I just said that they weren't of much importance to the game :-p

Well, eyecandy is important. And a painted model has better dice then a non-painted model. True story.

Hi,
go here:
http://tinyurl.com/23nul8q

Download Tau Kor'or'Vesh. At the end it has expanded options for the Kroot Sphere (variant options, yay). Also xenos fleet lists.
These drafts will go to GW when final and will become official at one point.

Only problem is though, doesn't the KWS cost like £40 though?

That is indeed a .... problem for most of us.

It can always be used a weapon because of its weight.

Yea I am looking at scratch building a fleet myself just to get a feel for the game could anyone PM me a rough size or dimensions for an Imperial fleet... not meaning to hijack your thread I am sure it would be helpful for you as well.

Well yes, but the OP's point was that he didn't like the GW selection.... I DID give him alternatives. there are plenty of spaceship minitures out there.

Kroot are meant to be really primitive though aren't they? So how do they construct massive WS?

Isn't battlefleet about 40k?

I meant the game 40k, not the setting 40k.

It is the same as Marines not being ubermegaawesome in BFG. Kroot have a big spaceship. And no one knows how they get them...

The kroot are a race of tribal scavengers. It doesn't mean they have no technology. Their guns, weaponry, equipment, etc. are fashioned by their own hands, they aren't borrowed from the Tau. They even have power weapons!

There's nothing saying the kroot can't build spaceships, and the fact that it's an inelegant sphere and they don't have fleets can easily fit into their fluff. Just imagine them packing up part or all of a tribe on a big THING designed to go from point A to point B while defending itself and that's about all you need. They don't need different "classes" of ships for exploration, war, science, etc just one big family ship that does it all.

40k Armies I play:

You could also consider checking out some of the other popular space games like Silent Death and Full Thrust and so on.

Popular being relative, of course . I've never seen either of those games being played TBH.

Unfortunately space games never seem to get much interest, BFG included. A pity really, considering how many people like Star Wars and Battlestar Galactica.

And I more meant rule systems that are considered, hmm, what's the word, canon? for the genre. Sort of like a person trying Battletech if they're interested in mechs.

I think it's because people want the 'feel' of a game that is lots of wooshy fighter action, but msot tabletop games are more slow, plodding 'age of sail' combats ins pace, unfortunately. :(

Working on someting you'll either love or hate. Hopefully to be revealed by November.
Play the games that make you happy.

I think the other problem is that there aren't really any space games out there that are being pushed by a sizable company in a meaningful way. FSA is close, but as a start-up brand it has only slowly built a following. If only GW would actually support BFG, I think it could be quite popular...
