Heello peepol!

Imma Nid player and I know the rules about gaining 4+ cover save from friendly/enemy units infront of you and so on.

Buuuuut!

What about flying flappy things like Gargoyles and Stompy things like Hive tyrants?

Do Gargoyles infront of a termagant squad confer a 4+ cover to the Termies and vice versa? Or because they're elevated it doesn't work either way?

Also, would a MC confer a 4+ cover save to a squad of Termagants (Or any similar sized infantry based unit at that) staying behind him and vice versa?

Would appreciate a short, informative reply.

Cheers!

Get down and look from the firing model's view.

If part of the target is obscured by intervening models or units, yes, there is cover.

MCs have their own rules for cover, however--generally those of vehicle's, so require 50% obscured not simply SOME of them.

Editing to add:
For MCs, cover is rare unless it is from a venomthrope or a unit (Tyrant Guard, Parasite, or Tyranid Prime, generally speaking) they are joined to.

The way it works with infantry units is that they cover other infantry units like area terrain.

You get down to model eye level and draw an imaginary line between the heads of the outermost models in the front unit.

If the rear unit is also infantry, and is partially below this line, they get a 4+ cover save. It doesn't matter if the rear unit's models are in fact 100% viewable in the gaps between the front unit's models.

See pp.21 to 22 for the details.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Gargoyles and Termagants are infantry. So are various medium sized Tyranids such as the Warriors and Venomthropes.

MCs are not infantry. They can often grant a cover save thanks to their sheer size. A Trygon, for instance, occupies a base about five inches long.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

As I understand it, the area 'between' models counts as providing cover, but the area 'below' models does not.

For example, if you had a row of gargs, immediately in front of a row of rippers, the rippers would not gain a cover save, since the 'sticks' do not count for obscurement.

Models are considered to occupy the area of their base. (Magic cylinder, as it used to be known.)

Kill - how are you getting a Volume from an Area?

All it means is that if you need to measure you can measure to anywhere on the base, as the model occupies THAT area. Nothing lets you translate an area to a volume.

Yes that's right. I was thinking of the case of units with more than one model.
