As the title says, what are your thoughts on the most effective way to use the Death Korps of Krieg Army list? For the purposes of this thread, assume that it is an Apocalypse game, using a list of 2000-3000 points. What units would you take? How would you use them? I'd love to hear your ideas.
I'm considering building a Apoc-only DKoK army, and want to know what exactly I'm getting into.

I plan on doing both: with Apocalypse you can get away with more than you can in pickup games of regular 40k.
However, I want to know how people would use the pure Forgeworld list. It seems like although you loose a lot of vehicular mobility, you make up for it with a lot of cheap artillery.
Here's my current plan: Multiple Artillery Batteries (Medusa Cannons and Earthshakers) supported by infantry platoons, using mobile grenadier squads in Centaurs (lightly armored fast vehicles) for securing objectives if need be. If you use the infantry platoons as bubble wrap, with their increased WS and ability to combine as per the new codex, regular DKoK infantry squads have a bit more CC-protective capability than regular codex troops. give the Sgt.s power weapons and you have an effective means to keeping deepstrikers/outflankers from sweeping through the guns in an assault. Additional units can include Engineers with Hades Breaching Drills for close-range anti-tank capability, heavy weapon squads (mortars, ACs, missile launchers) for additional mid-range firepower. What do you think?

I wouldn't bother. A lot of people dislike playing against FW, even when the underlying codex is pretty weak, as is the case here. Just buy the sweet models and play C: IG.

I'm game. I'm in the planning stages of a Krieg army, having ordered one squad to paint up and model while i work out what I need.
Here is a rough estimate of my starting 1000 points or so
HQ: Company Command Squad
T: Platoon Command Squad
2 Squads of Krieg Infantry
T: Platoon Command Squad
2 Squads of Krieg Infantry
E: Battery of Heavy Mortars (3)
E: Battery of Quad Launchers (3)
HS: Russes as will fit
Its only about 1000 points, and I'm having trouble deciding on armament for the squads. Most don't have an autocannon option, in particular the line infantry squads don't have a heavy weapon option.
My idea with this was a pretty static core, with a lot of artillery plates to cover the enemy advance. I also figured I might proxy the mortars for Medusas until I can save up for the actual kit.
I'm not sold on the Grenadiers and Centaur only because of the small number of them, and their expense.
I do like the Hades breaching drill with Engineers (or multiple squads of engineers attached). Of course, the wisdom of charging the enemy with engineers remains to be seen.
Can the Krieg list combine squads like the IG dex? I thought in the beginning it listed the die hard, hardened, and that they can use orders, but didn't notice the other. I'll re-check my print out.

Yes, their infantry squads listing mentions the "combined squads" special rule.
I am definitely leaning towards using IG codex, not because people won't play against FW but because the DKoK list doesn't have much of anything in the way of vehicles... I'd like at least a few chimeras.

I think that's the thing about Krieg that would throw people - not very much mech. Its a more interesting list building exercise since clearly, to get across the board you're either walking or using Centaurs.
However, for Apoc games as you mentioned, then you can get into the SuperHeavies (in particular the Gorgon troop carrier) if you want more tanks.
With their special rules and ability to hang around, you could literally stuff their gun barrels with Krieg troops who would pretty much have to be killed to the man - would be expensive to build, but a horde would be very thematic in a trench/siege situation.
I purchased a bunch of Sentinels which I really wanted to use, but the Krieg list doesn't have them. For me, that'll make it a more distinctive force.
