Hey guys n gallites.

I am currently considering dropping my LR redeemer in favour of a squad of sanguinary guard with chapter banner. I absolutely adore the models(some of the best in 40k) but I have yet to be convinced by their rules(no invun, ouch!)

I dearly want to have some in my army but i dont want to risk it if they are totally useless.

Just need some tips on how to use them effectively

Cheers in advance peepsicles

They're basically jump pack termies with power armor. Geared mainly for anti infantry they can dish out a lot of pain to MEQs and even some swarms with their fancy bolters. Add in at least one fist and they can take on most things but in turn they cant take too much punishment without a priest. Really for the price you pay for them, mind as well get another squad of assaults or a squad a termies or some more tanks. They are decent with dante though, expensive but at least they're troops

In my experience the Sang Guard are just to overpriced for what they do. If you build your list around them (Sanguinor, Priest, chapter banner, death masks and such) they can be quite nasty, getting 5+ attacks on the charge, which will pretty much wipe anything out. But again, if you do that you will be horribly outnumbered.

for the points, I'd rather take more DC.

One of them filthy casuals...

Sanguinary guard are great, used right. I don't see much use for them outside of a DOA army. But if you get them into any MEQ unit with a priest in tow, they will absolutely murder whatever they hit. Too many attacks to fail, especially with the reroll. I run them as an alternative to vanguard in my 1750 list. However, I don't see much of a use for more than 1 unit at a time.

So basically, they are a high impact unit, they have a 2+ armour and I can always throw in a libby to give them a 5+ cover, but then I will be reducing his ability to cast other psychic powers.

I might just buy a box and use them as assault marines for visual nomness.

Despite what people say I really like them. I keep them near another assault squadwhich has a priest so I don't make an already expensive unit more expensive but still keeping in the FnP bubble.

I run them with a banner and 1X PF, so they get 4 attacks on the charge plus a librarian for re-roll hits. All PW and re-roll hits, plus a 2+ save and FnP ? Definatley worth it, just use other units to screen them or make use of cover every chance you get, and they'll get the job done.

I ran a whole army of these guys a couple times last month and I have to tell you..... they are really a very specialized unit. essentially their job is to murder your opponent's rank and file troopers. If they go up against his elites or HQs they're the ones who will get murdered. I was really surprised by how limited they turned out to be, since you would think, with melta pistols and all those power weapons, + flying, that they could handle alot of different situations. they're very short ranged though. I wouldnt say they're useless - they're specialists. If you add them it should be because you want a squad of infantry killers, not because you want a squad of general purpose elites. you have assault terminators for that. That being said let me know if you want to buy some of these guys because I've got a whole army full of them that I'd let go at a quite reasonable price : )

I like mine. I have them with Dante and a Priest, with some good upgrades, so they're a fantastic Deathstar unit, that is also scoring. Dante also frees up a few points, since you don;t need to buy death masks for them if he's in the squad.

I don't like them. They are like jumping Terminators that lack a 5+ save and don't come with affordable options for Storm Shields. They are just an over-priced target for your enemy to cash in on. Assault Terminators, Death Company, Jump Pack Assault Marines, Drop Pod Sternguard, and Vanguard Veterans are all much better options if you want a kitted-out unit to bust heads with.

They are a great unit if used with Dante. Other than that I don't see much value in fielding them .

In linear terms Sanguinary Guard are actually quite a bargain for the amount of Power Weapons and jump packs that you get. Power Weapons are 15 points per model throughout the codex, Angelus Boltgun is around 5 Points. Even if you could kit out an ordinary Assault Squad the same way (which you can't) it would still cost you 200 points, and you would be missing out on Fearless, 2+ Save, Extra Attack, Master Crafted Re-roles etc... The same is true if you tried to kit out Honour Guard or Vanguard the same way, apart from you would also have to pay an extra 50 points for the Jump Packs. They would rock in at around 265 points; again without Fearless or a 2+ save.

Of course the real question is: Would you really want to arm a squad that way?

With the chapter banner they can swoop down, pump ten S4 AP4 bolter shots, or 5 plasma/melta shots into an enemy squad, then assault with 20 power weapon attacks (5 re-rolls), Not to mention possibly having Furious Charge (either from a Priest or Red Thirst) and possibly hitting on 3s with the Death Masks... These guys will go through pretty much any unit in the game like a hot knife.

Unfortunately however, because they only have 5 wounds and no invulnerable save, they end up being kind of a glass hammer. Any unit containing Power Weapons with 4+ initiative will put a dent in them. Under no circumstances should they try to assault something like Lightning Claw Terminators.

This means they are stuck laying down the almighty fury of 20 power weapons attacks onto hapless Ork boyz, and MEQs with bolters (maybe the occasional low initiative power fist). Which they are probably going to overkill with 5 power weapons.

With the chapter banner and some other perks they could probably cut down a squad of TH/SS terminators before they were able to hit back, which is worth mentioning.

I kind of like them, but there are a lot of other elite choices I like a lot too and only 3 slots... If you have Dante and can buy them as troops then they are a no brainer. But otherwise I guess it really depends on what your army needs mosts.

While I like them, I've never had any luck when running a list with them, as I've yet to have them survive a round in CC (but that may be just my bad luck).

Personally, I find they're way too over-priced (more than a land raider) to be worth their swift deaths. I prefer running some termies, who can both take it and dish it out, whereas the SG cost more and can't do nearly as well in a longer CC.

Like I said they are a great troop choice if you run Dante. Otherwise I don't see much value in them.
