Pulsating Possessed Chaos Marine

Denver, CO

I went to the Winter's Harvest tournament at Valhallas Game Store in Denver, Co over the weekend. It was a 3 round event with about 36 players showing up.

I'll apologize up front for some of the blurry pictures, but I figure a blurry picture is better than no picture. I was unable to finish painting my nurgle themed daemons so I took my tzeentch, slaanesh combo instead.

I'm currently sitting at 46 out of 54 possible battle points. Somewhere around the top of the pack.

Mission: Victory Points, Kill points (only for hq's +2 per hq)
Deployment: Pitched Battle

Defiler

He wins the roll off and lets me go first. I pick the side of the table I'm standing on and we begin. He deploys in the center with vindicators and rhino's forwards screening the defiler, daemon prince's, and land raider.

Daemons Turn #1: I get in, not my preferred wave. So I start with 3 heralds, plague bearers, 2 horror squads, the masque, and the flamers. The masque and flamers drop and try to hide behind the center stone pit of death (the masque deviated out into the open but got a good run role to get back into hiding). 2 heralds went on the left, one on the right. The plague bearers dropped in the center behind the pit. 1 units of horror dropped on the right hand side to support the lone herald and the masque the other went to the left. Shooting is pretty good. I destroy the noise marine rhino, and immobilize the rhino in front of the land raider.

Here's me trying to hide my fragile units from his shooting on the initial drop. There are two heralds and a unit of horrors off to the left out of the picture.

CSM Turn #1: The lash princes jump forward and lash a herald twice (6 and 4) to pull the herald close to them, only one is able to make it into hand to hand). He moves his noise marines back out of flamer strike range. He moves his only mobile rhino up 12 inch's on the right. Shooting see's 4 of the horrors from one unit killed. The highlight is him dropping a battle cannon shot on top of the last horror to try and kill it because he knows I'll run it back and try to hide it, but the shot instead deviates onto my chariot.

My opponent is playing really cautious because of the flamers and the masque. I realize that if I want to get him on the offensive I need to sacrifice the flamers.
Daemons Turn #2: I get in 2 grinder's and one unit of horrors. I drop the horrors to support the right. The two squad of horrors manage to take out his daemon prince. The grinder's manage to immobilize a vindicator. The flamers jump up and flame his vindicators doing nothing. The masque charges into his daemon prince to help out my chariot (the masque did actually put a wound on the prince).

Here I probably should have held back the masque I was just trying to keep that daemon prince locked in hth. Keeping the masque back would have helped to clump his troops for pie plate goodness or pull them out of cover. I also moved one of the heralds a bit too close to his defiler, giving him a free 2 bp.

CSM Turn #2: His land raider continues to be stuck behind immobilized vehicles and shuffles to the left. The unit of csm on the right jump out of their rhino and assault the herald locked in combat with the daemon prince, they kill off both the masque and the herald. His defiler runs up and charges one of my heralds.

I was a little surprised when he jumped the guys in the rhino out and went after the herald, I figured they would go for plague bearers or horrors.

Daemons Turn #3: I get in the 3rd grinder, one unit of fiends, and the last unit of horrors. The horror's drop to the left to get side shots at one of the vindicators. The last soul grinder drops in the center. I drop a pie plate on the noise marines, and with some shooting from the grinder's super bolter down the squad. The fiends drop behind the central ruin to the left of it to prepare some counter assaults. I manage to put one more wound on the daemon prince. The defiler finish's off the herald it was fighting. I decide to sacrifice the herald and instead charge his vindicator that didn't move, with my soul grinder on the left, and destroy it.

Here the goal was to overload his anti-tank abilities. I knew he could kill 1-2 grinders, but he wouldn't be able to get all 3.

CSM Turn #3: He continues to hunt chariot's by flying his daemon prince up next to my third chariot and charging it. The defiler runs into terrain, and then assaults the horror squad on that side (the defiler whiff's only getting one wound which i save). His last csm squad get's out of their ride between the two front soul grinders. And his other cms squad moves up. The first csm squad whiff's with their melta's but the second squad melat's the grinder.

He sat still with the raider to get the two shots off at my grinder. Don't know if I would have done that or if I would have just moved the raider away. Up on top of that center piece of terrain if you look hard enough you will find two soul grinders, a daemon prince, and a chariot, it's almost like a game of wheres Waldo. You could tell my opponent was systematically going after my hq's for the bonus points. But I feel he would have been much better off lashing my fiends into a bunch and then using the defilers flamer on them, then multi-assaulting them. That would have drastically reduced the size of the squad.

Daemons Turn #4: I get in my last unit of fiends and put them on the right hand side. The left side soul grinder charges and destroyes the land raider and kills one terminator in the explosion. The right side soul grinder charges a unit of csm kills 3 and routes and runs down the unit. The fiends by-pass his defiler and instead multi-charge the 2nd csm unit and the daemon prince. They kill the daemon prince and get locked in with the marines. His defiler kill's a horror.

CSM Turn #4: His deep striking terminators come in right in front of the right hand soul grinder and melta it. His other unit moves up and gets one terminator in the rear arc of the left side soul grinder, which hits and destroys the other grinder. His defiler kills no horrors.

Daemons Turn #5: The right side fiend unit charges the three man terminator squad and kills 1. The other unit of fiends multi-charges the immobilized rhino, the immobilized vindicator, and the other terminator squad. I destroy both vehicles, and kill one terminator. The defiler kills no horrors.

You can see here the multi-assault on the immobilized vehicles and the terminators that killed my soul grinder.

CSM Turn #5: I kill off the rest of the three man unit. His rhino guns down the lone surviving horror that was hiding on my side of the table. And I kill off 2 more terminators from the other squad leaving one in combat, which I hit and run out of.

Daemons Turn #6: The three remaining fiends charge his defiler, while the large six man squad charges the lone terminator. I kill off the terminator but only manage to rip an arm off of the defiler. My remaining 2 horror squads try to gun down the rhino with bolts, to no avail.

CSM Turn #6: The defiler gets the horror's down to one model. The fiends still can't penetrate it's armor. The rhino shuffles around some more.

Daemons Turn #7: The other squad of 6 fiends charges into the defiler, and finally manage to take it down, thus saving the lone horror from the squad. The rhino lives but has no guns.

That there is a whole mess of fiends.

At the end of the game he had a rhino left. I had 2 squads of horrors, 1 squad of plague bearers and 1 squad of fiends above half, and 1 squad of horrors, and 1 squad of fiends at half or below. This gave me my third major victory, +4 for killing his 2 hq's, as an aside he got a +8 since I had 4 hq's running around on the table.

I ecked out first place by about 3 points, interestingly enough the person I played in the 3rd round (the csm player) actually ended up with 3rd.

All in all a very fun tournament with 3 fun games and very nice terrain.

Well done tactically. When I first read his list I figured it'd be an auto win for the Daemons then your wrong wave came in. Really looked like his list was designed to clump enemy units with lash then drop pie plates. Game kind of see sawed back and forth then you dropped the hammer. Congrats. : )
