Hello, I'm thinking of selling off most of my Cadians for a new type of IG army, I would rather have a veteran/ armored company. And right now I have a blob army. However, I would only do this if I were to sell off most of my Cadians for a new type of guard regiment, I'm looking to go for an old style, more "less-modern" looking army. I'm planning on using the Empire Handhgunners as guardsmen/vets, outriders as rough riders, but I need some help on other stuff... What should I use as vehicles go, do you think standard chimeras/russ's would look decent in this type of army? Guardsmen Rough Riders Mortors Psychers Thoughts, suggestions, comments, would you refuse to play versus this type of army? I will be using Round bases by the way.

They seem more fantasy (hmm, I wonder why) but I think they would work.

Yes haha, I just love the look of them, but there are not many Fantasy players over here, I would convert all their guns to lasguns, and I am contemplating on different Rough Riders, I do not like all the Armor on them.
I'm probably going to convert the current HWT's if for any reason I use them now that I think about it, but I'm not 100% positive.
Color would not be quartered like the empire, much more ordinary leather,cloth,etc...
Thank you for your input Draglide.

You could use those cannons as guns on Leman Russes lol. Think the those would be a nice alternative to rough riders, even with the armor. Perhaps you could switch some catachan parts on some of them to reduce the amount of armor.

Not sure if I would switch for the cannons, the proportion may be a bit off. But that is a great idea on switching them out with some Catachan parts, thank you for that idea! Automatically Appended Next Post: origarmi chicken wrote:wouldn't the flagellents be better for Penal legion troops instead?
That could work as well! Not sure If I would use Penal Legion but they could be perfect, any ideas on Psychers?

I've converted a squad of Guardmen using the first picture guys.
Its really easy to fit the Cadian las guns arms to the fantasy bodies.
I sold them on ebay as I lost interest but they do make a good looking Steampunk type force.
hope you have better luck.

Necron bits make good robotic limbs if you're going for a steampunk look and they can add character to a command or elite model.

Exactly what I was thinking, but without the Fable reference.

I'm thinking of using more Catachan bits, but I could try Cadian bits as well.
You dont happen to have any pictures do you?

I actually think I have that sprue from the IG CCS that has the robotic arm, perhaps I could try some Necron bits if I decide to theme my army like that, thank you for that suggestion.

I'm not sure I would take either, my force would most likely be fast moving, HWT's will be a waste.

That would be cool, however I just would not want any TO to be getting mad about the proportion.
I want to think of a way to make a valk . . .
Do you think Chimera's will be to odd looking if they are stock in this army?

It seems to me you are trying to marry two distinct IG concepts:
1. Feral/low tech IG: back-worlders recruited into the IG or acting as the local PDF and using some IG tech but lots of low-tech home-world equipment.
2. Mechanized "steel legion" style IG
At first this seems an odd combination to me. A feral/low tech IG force lends itself more to blobs/penal legion/foot slogging imho, with some added rough riders and artillery so you can utilize the cannon/mortar models and mounted fantasy figs, etc. This has a certain charm, and when you add in preachers, commissars or similar you can give that "conscripted" feel to what is an otherwise bizarre looking 40K force. Again the level of integration will depend on how much crossover you do with standard IG models, bits anf bobs.
I think it is a fine line between representing a low-tech IG force creatively/believably and simply throwing fantasy figs with rifles on a table and calling them IG.
The concept is interesting, but requires some creative/convincing modeling...
Beyond that It is a further stretch to pull off "mechanized low-tech". Not that it can't be done, but the proof i gonna be in what you do modeling/painting the vehicles and integrating them into the army. The danger is you simply have Empire militia driving around in tanks...
In the end it is going to come down to your modelling/converting skills, paint skills and your overall vision for what a low-tec IG force should look like so as to still be recognizable as a 40k force.
Personally I think a low-tech IG forcer that plays up the cooler WHFB models would be more interesting: lots of mortar squads using the fantasy mortars, lots of rough riders to take advantage of all the mounted fantasy models, Ogrynns, etc., etc.

I agree completely with what you said, and thank you for your input.
I certainly need to think of a way to include tanks, since I would prefer not to blob up people.
I'm having some trouble getting a low tech tank look, which may force me to change the idea, perhaps to Catachans, or Cadians again.
However I still would love to make this idea happen, any ideas anyone?

Catachan rifles would work really well since they are already separate from the arms. The packs and such might also work, but I would caution against the arms which would probably look rediulously oversized on the WFB figs you are looking at.
All the best with the project.

I was thinking of using the Catachan arms for any guns, but I think the "Nude" Arms might look a bit odd on the Handgunners, worth a shot though!
