I've not shared photos of these before, but to kick off the showcase forum, here are a couple of the characters in my 1K points vanilla space marines force.

First we have the chaplain, who is one of my better paintjobs.

He is a bit bleached out there so the very smooth black highlights dont look quite as good as they do in real life, but you can see the detail very clearly at least. The right hand and bolter was miscast on my model so I used an old bolter holding hand from late 2nd edition to create that gesture. They still had sculpted fingers back in those days. I added some studs to the arm to make it match, then stuck a bolt pistol on the rear of the model (not pictured, clipped to belt) so there is still some WYSIWIG there.

My whole army is a tribute to 2nd edition marines and my induction into the hobby in my youth. One thing I have always wanted to do was to create the captain from the cover of the 2nd edition box set. I dont collect blood angels and there is a lot of stuff that does not work very well when you convert the painting into a model (the scabbard for instance), so here is my 'interpretation' of that model...

I was originally going to paint the flame motif on the legs but decided it would overpower the colour scheme too much so didnt bother. The conversion was quite simple, it was just a head swap, sculpting a bit of neck detail and padding out the right arm to point outwards. I did not stretch the arm as much as the painting / old conversion in the old modelling book as it made the model look really unbalanced. I tried it out originally but it just looked odd from too many angles. I also used a bolt pistol instead of a bolter for the same reason.

Thanks for reading!

Thanks. No name or background for them at all, just plain old codex grey with the shoulder colour content reflecting the company number as per the codex.

I like the chaplain, but the space wolf looks a little flat for my tastes.

Listen, my children, as I pass onto you the truth behind Willy Wonka and his factory. For every wonka bar ever created in existance, Mr. Wonka sacraficed a single Oompa Loompa to the god of chocolate, Hearshys. Then, he drank the blood of the fallen orange men because he fed them a constant supply of sugary chocolate so they all became diabetic and had creamy, sweet-tasting blood that willy could put into each and every Wonka bar. That is the REAL story behind willy wonka's Slaughter House!

Your chaplain is great, nice work/detail the helmet and chest aquilla. I like the tone of grey used on your marine, its simple but effective.

Nice work, although I agree that the grey Marine is a bit boring. Also, good idea to create a seperate forum for completed models

Thanks The grey marine is indeed boring and uninspiring, but to me is exactly the look of the older second edition era generic marines and captains which was the look I was going for with him. It does look a little flatter than other chapters though as grey is a pain to highlight without going completely OTT.

I really like the low-contrast base + highlighting but little shading style on the marine. Oldskool is always a good look to go for. Is the marine's shoulder pad the one that you used in your decal tutorial? Also, thank you so much for making a showcase page! People will definately take more interest in this, rather than just the blogs. Will you ever rename painting & modeling to painting and modelling questions and answers?
