I would like to dedicate this thread to this awesome little fella (no, not the Guardsman!), who left this mortal realm last March. He shall be forever remembered as the Emperor's finest!

.

I've been tinkering away at some Tyranids for a while, and wasn't quite sure how to carry on painting them. A thought came to me, and so I carried out a test on a Termagant to see what it might look like:

At first I thought that it may have been the wrong choice, but it came together nicely in the end. The longest part was painting all of the details, as I expected - something that shouldn't be a problem once I have a production line on the go. Here's the rest of his mates:

I was worried that the yellow wash would have been more patchy in places, but it produced a very smooth result. For bigger models a drybrush may be necessary on larger areas.

Anyhow, the plan is to sneak up on the all of the other guys whilst they're all busy dealing with heresy and whatnot, then eat them. I found A Tale of Four Warlords in this month's WD quite a motivation to get these guys done, and perhaps more. Six months should be fair. With The Gathering Storm drawing to its close and 8th Edition 40k on the horizon, I'm excited for the future of Warhammer. I would quite like to get involved and play a few games in the future!

One thing's for certain, though - I really need more Casandora Yellow...

Hello all, just confirming that I have not fallen to Tyranid invasion! Here's how they're looking so far:

So far they have been washed, and I have begun edge highlighting their carapaces. I'm not too concerned about subtlety.

I had a mad spurt of painting and then put the brushes down for a while. I'm in it for the long run with these guys. I'm also considering to layer their skin with Dorn Yellow.

These 'Nids shall be called Hive Fleet Mastodon. The thought of naming them this occurred to me listening to Mastodon's Leviathan album!

8th edition lands this weekend, and things are looking super exciting. I'm really looking forward to what it brings.

Until next time!

Cosmic.

Hi everyone,

I've finished edge highlighting the Termagants' carapaces:

You may notice that progress is slow, and you would be correct. I have re-learnt that 28mm miniature wargaming does not lend itself to massive model count armies easily. I did consider this, but quite forgot the implications of painting so many guys to an average-ish standard.

The points value of the eighty Termagants and Hormagaunts that I'm currently working on are less than a Space Marine squad! It is quite ridiculous, really. I love huge horde armies, but there are ways of painting them.

As with many people, when I do get hobby time, I want to be as productive as can be. For me, the answer to this conundrum has been by using dip. With all of the gaunts that a Tyranid army should have, this is a great solution. That way, they can all be chucked in a box for storage without worry of ruining paintwork.

So, yes, I am reconsidering what to do - Tyranid-wise - after these guys. (I will finish them, however, and perhaps add a Tyranid Prime to lead them.) I have a few ideas, and am leaning towards my "dirty dipping" habits!

Since the last time I posted, 8th edition has arrived! It's looking super-awesome. I picked up Dark Imperium because... why not! Yes, I love the look of Primaris Marines...

Like I mentioned, 28mm is a bit silly for higher-than-skirmish level miniature wargame battles. It does look very nice, however, and the size of the models makes them easy to paint - but not at a fast rate by any means. Suddenly I remembered about Hawk Wargames' Dropzone/fleet Commander games. How could I forget? Indeed, Dropzone's second edition is on the way (perhaps later this year). Expect some in DZC/DFC goodness here in the future!

Thanks for reading!

Hi everyone! What you see below is an incredibly deadly box o’Nids!

I’v been away for a couple of weeks (something that I haven’t done for a while), and decided to bring my gaunts to paint up. It has been one of the most productive hobby things that I’ve done. Although it might not look like much, contained within the box above is seventy-nine ‘Nids. Their armour is finished, and their claws are awaiting a second thin coat of Macragge Blue, as Lord Duncan demands. Almost there now! It’s a very simple scheme, but the repetition is where it gets you.

I remembered this excellent tutorial. I first saw it not long after I had started mine. When the painting begins to wear on your morale, it’s easy to look for an alternative solution. However, I thought of a cool way to go about it with different colours. We’ll see! I’m slowly getting there with my guys now, though. Here’s the video (by Striking Scorpion):

Until next time! May your dice roll favourably and your paints be thin.

Hi all!

Progress is really coming along, the end is in sight! I have finished the claws on the Hormagaunts:

That just leaves the Termagant's claws to finish off with Calgar Blue. I spent a little more time on the Horms by retouching up their front claws with Macragge Blue first.

Really excited for the upcoming Codex: Tyranids! After the Termagant's claws, I have to paint all of their teeth, tongues, and eyes! Then I need to retouch a couple of unfortunate (yet small) mishaps, and wash a little Casandora Yellow in some places.

So, these eighty Gaunts will be the main bulk of the army! I have a few plans of where to go next, but the main theme will be of the classic Tyranid swarm.

Can't wait to get these guys into an army and on to the tabletop! The Hive Mind yearns to know the secrets of the Primaris Space Marines...

Beware, Hive Fleet Mastodon comes!

@amazingturtles: Yes, me too! "Ravenously adorable" is a phrase that I'll use from now on

Codex: Tyranids is here! It's really well balanced between fluff, pictures and rules. In regards to the latter, I have yet to play a game of 8th edition, and it has been long since I last played 40k (4th ed. was the last time I did ), so all seems good!

Here's the progress so far!

The end really is in sight! Their claws are done, I've added more Casandora Yellow in places, and their teeth/mouths have received an Agrax Earthshade wash. Next up is to paint the teeth Screaming Skull, paint the eyes and tongues white, and then wash them Biel-Tan Green and Druchii Violet, respectively. That's it!

But we're no there yet! I shan't be basing them up so soon. Next up after these guys are twenty Genestealers, and twenty Gargoyles! After having painted (almost) eighty Gaunts, I am very much looking forward to the change.

It's really nice when it all starts to tie together. Starting out with this lot certainly was daunting, but I'm very glad now that I did.

Until next time, take care!

Teeth Done!

About as tedious as I expected, but certainly not too bad - and it didn’t take too long, either. Leather straps, on the other hand, can go and ...erm

That only leaves the tongues and eyes left to do!

I’ve been flicking through Codex: Tyranids, and have thought of a rough army list. A Tervigon is a must! Plus, a trio of Carnifexes...

Until next time!

Cosmic.

ALMOST THERE!

The eyes and tongues have been given a couple of thin coats of White Scar, ready for washing! The eyes on their Fleshborers will be glazed with Waystone Green, but I need to tidy up around them first.

Today, I popped into my nearest GW for supplies. I hadn’t for a while, and I had a good chat with the store manager. They were extremely helpful and friendly, as always! I also picked up a Tervigon and some Termagants.

One of my main motivations for this project is that I want to (eventually) play a game with a good colleague of mine. I’ve been dragging my feet a little (as you all know), but an army has almost formed now!

So, next up to paint is the six Warriors, and a Tervigon plus their Termagants. Not much to paint when compared to the guys above! I’m really looking forward to it. It will be a 750pts army - my opponent plays Space Wolves, so it might be a tough time for the swarm!

Thanks for reading!

Until next time - Cosmic.

FINISHED!

Phew, we got there! I distinctly remember when GW released their Washes and Foundation (Base) paints. (Ten years ago now, I believe?). By the Emperor, does it make things easier!

It's also the first time that I've used a Glaze paint (on the Termagant's Flesh Borer eyes). I am super impressed!

I really like how these guys turned out. They were certainly easy and effective to paint. I've mentioned previously about considering whether or not to highlight their skin more, but I now think that a single wash of Casandora Yellow is certainly good enough for these guys. However, I will be paying extra attention to the Tervigon and Warrior's skins.

Until next time! Take care, and thank you for following along so far!

Cosmic.

Hi all! I've undercoated the Warriors and Termagants:

I've used The Army Painter's Skeleton Bone primer. Originally, I intended to dip all these guys. (Which, quite frankly, would probably have been a wise idea ) However, divine inspiration from The Emperor - praise be unto him - arrived, and so I went down the yellow route.

Why use Skeleton Bone, then? I could absolutely have just used a good ol' white undercoat, but the contrast would have been much higher once washed. Why not base them with Ushabti Bone or Screaming Skull beforehand, then? Well, the first is tonally too brown, and the second is too bright. Skeleton Bone works because it has quite a yellow tone.

Blimey, I've used that colour so many times now I must use something different for whatever I choose to do next...

Right, so I need to cover a few areas where the primer didn't completely hit. I've decided that I will just paint these Warriors and Termagants that you see here. By the time that I've done that, plus based and varnished the rest of the guys, that will be more than enough to do! The Tervigon will have to be bare plastic for now.

Until next time, take care!

Cosmic.

Nice sharp paint job, man! I'm jealous of all the gaunts.

I think the scheme looks better on Tyranids than Iyanden. I now have this comic-book vision in my head of a Tyranid fleet approaching Iyanden with one color scheme, and coming out the other end looking like your guys after nomming on a bunch of Eldar, and going on their merry way in their new bright yellow regalia.

Looking forward to seeing the Warriors!

Hi Insectum! Thank you very much! I'm jealous of all of your awesome Warriors, too

Yes, I couldn't help but notice that they have a very Iyanden-ish look to them... and I love your vision! Gave me a good chuckle The Hive Mind was obviously jelly of Iyanden's stylish tastes!

Thank you! Yes, it was nice to call them done - it certainly feels like main weight of the army has been lifted. I'll be sure to give the Warriors a little more attention

What? More of them?

Yep, that’s right, more!

Yesterday I thought that I’d give the Warriors another quick spray of Skeleton Bone. However, it turned out to be tricky business! I got there eventually, but it was a bit of a fight.

This is no fault of the primer! The weather’s been a little chilly these past few days, and there’s still a little snow on the ground. A bowl of warm water always helps!

But it did get me thinking. I thought “you know what? I fancy a change.” - and so I will! First, however, I want to finish this force.

Luckily I’d modelled one of the Warriors as a Tyranid Prime, so they could be the HQ. I’d also built a Carnifex when I first got the Tyranid Swarm box. Adding the points together, plus with the Rippers that you see here, and it comes in at a beautiful 750pts! I’m really happy about that

So, it’s time to get finishing these guys! As for the next step, I have a really cool colour scheme in mind - we’ll be Back in Black, baby!

Take care, until next time!

Basecoating has begun!

I have re-established my synapse connection with The Hive Mind, and have reverted back from instinctively indecisive behavior!

Yesterday I mentioned about switching to a black colour scheme, but I have now realised that this would be stupid to do at this point. I've thought of an awesome way to go up to 1500 points, an have the models available to do so. Certainly, I would paint a new Tyranid army black, but I now feel that I really love the colour scheme that I'm currently using!

Anyhow, it has been nice painting something other than Gaunts! The Warriors are really beautiful models, and the Carnifex is lots of much fun, and so big!

Next up is another thin coat of Averland Sunset, then touch up a few places with Skeleton Bone, and then it's time for the YELLOWING

So, until then, do take care, and happy hobbying!

...and have a very Merry Christmas, too! I might have an update before the new year

"I don't like sand. It's coarse and rough and irritating and it gets everywhere." - Tallarn Guardsman Derrik, M41.888, probably.

2018 is in full swing! I hope that you enjoyed the holidays, as it's often referred to on the other side of the ancient Terran Atlantic Ocean. If you're anything like myself, you - along with your fellow Battle Brothers and Sisters - purged the taint of Chaos from 2017 in the fires of the Holy Promethium. At least, I think that's how to put it...

Above is the Gaunts, sanded and ready to be painted like sand. Indeed, contrast is always desirable when painting a base, but I just feel like painting the sand to look like sand.

Will have pictures when they're all done and varnished!

Hi everyone! The Gaunts are now ready for varnishing!

I couldn't resist sharing a final WIP picture of them. I painted the sand and base rims using Yellow Ochre (Daler-Rowney "system 3" acrylic), and then drybrushed the sand with Screaming Skull once dry. Lastly, I used a sponge to paint around all of the base rims (my favourite part!) once more.

As mentioned, I shall return with pictures of them all varnished - along with some friends, too!

Take care!

Hello everyone,

I hope you are all doing well. It has been some time since I last posted. What can I say? Life stuff, really - such as the vital task of consuming biomass to fuel the Hive Ship!

I've cracked on with some more painting. Here are some more Termagants, and Ripper Swarms:

I've got the edge-highlighting out of the way, which is by far the longest step to do. In the end it's always worth it, and it's downhill from here.

I've concocted a 1000pts list - I'll put it briefly here:

1000pts Tyranids List

1 Tervigon - 225pts.

40 Termagants - 160pts.

40 Hormagaunts - 200pts.

6 Tyranid Warriors with 5 Deathspitters, a Venom Cannon, and a Lash Whip + Bonesword - 187pts.

3 Ripper Swarms - 33pts.

1 Carnifex with Tusks and a Thresher Scythe - 87pts.

1 Trygon - 108pts.

Total: 1000pts!

So there we have it! Until next time - take care!

Cosmic.

Hello everyone, and Happy Easter for yesterday!

The twelve Termagants and three Ripper Swarms and 95% completed. Here they are:

What's left to be done is to wash the eyes with Biel-Tan Green, the tongues with Druchii Violet, and the Fleshborer eyes with Waywatcher Green. I also need to touch up some places with Casandora Yellow, Seraphim Sepia, and perhaps Agrax Earthshade. Man, I love washes!

So, that's 52 Termagants, 40 Hormagaunts, and 3 Ripper Swarms! Probably the points-cost equivalent of 5 Custodes...

Next up is the Warriors! I really look forward to painting them, and will certainly spend a little more time per model.

Once I've painted the Carnifex, I will see if I can play my first game. Using the 1000pts list above: if you take away the Tervigon and Trygon, then make one of the Warriors a Tyranid Prime, and then add ten Termagants, it become a 750pts list.

Thanks for stopping by!

Cosmic.
