Subject: Equipping Plasma Vets - When does it become too much?
|
 |
Guard Heavy Weapon Crewman
|
First I want to start by listing the troop core of my army.
PCS - 4x Flamer (In Chimera w/ ML + HF)
2x Infantry Squad (Blobbed) w/ 2x GL, 2x Autocannon, Commissar
Heavy Weapon Squad w/ 3x Mortars
Veterans w/ 3x Melta, Shotguns (In Chimera w/ ML + HF)
Veterans w/ 3x Melta, Shotguns (In Chimera w/ ML + HF)
Veterans w/ 3x Plasma Gun, Vox
Veterans w/ 3x Plasma Gun, Vox
Now I must go ahead and say that I plan on using the plasma vets in more defensive roles. I normally play against Space Marines who come forward or MC heavy Tyranids who come forward. I have 2 Vendettas that the plasma vets can ride around in should they need to.
My question is, is it too much to tack on a plasma pistol and lascannon to both Plasma Vet squads and why? I am sure some people would advocate the cheaper Autocannon instead, but I feel like the AP synergy is worth it with the lascannon, and that 8 twin linked strength 7+, AP2 shots against say a Trygon Prime is a very enticing prospect.
So please vote, and then explain your thoughts Also if you don't like my troops choice as a whole, go ahead and elaborate on that too.
P.S. The above troop core + 3 Chimeras, and added Plasma Pistol/Lascannon to both squads comes out to 925pts.

since you wnat the Plasma Vets to "camp", i'd switch the Chimeras to them. they can set in the Chimera and take pot shots(up to 5) from the Chimera.
and i think i'd see myself using PP at most in the sqd. i prefer them to be not too expensive. just the 3 plasma is usually all for me.

First I would go for x3 plasma. After all the core parts of the army is in place then I would add in PP

If they are in Chimeras then they can't benefit from Bring it Down... =/ That is a big turn off for me. I'd rather be out and dug into some cover with them.

I will never be convinced heavy weapon teams inside squads is effective. Also, keep everything cheap until you have 20 spare points left, then throw some pistols in. Don't forget you could lose your sergeant from a burn too.

Yeah, the problem with giving them hw is the unit becomes static. 40k is not static, especially in objective games. I often use plasma to objective camp, but I use my chimera's to move them to the objectives, and I usually want to shoot while moving.
I am perfectly happy to give up BID in exchange for an armored casing on a vet squad. 10 vets on the ground even in cover are often dead. 10 vets in a chimera are versatile.
If you want to use BID in monstrous creatures us blobs with lascannons where you have enough ablative wounds to maintain a stationary position, or AC heavy squads. Even better are LRBT and hydras.

You know, I've always wanted to see someone run an army where the only special/heavy weapons used are Plasma based.
If only for that one game in which he rolls mostly 1's for his shots.

lol I once used an entire 21st century army with nothing but grenade launchers as a hvy weapon ..4 for every 10 men and that was 215 men no body armor lol....I faced Space Wolfs then and it was down to the last man. A vet sgt for me vs a Space Puppy capt in Termie armor in close combat I got lucky with a power sword strike for the win.

I like the 3x plasma, plasma pistol, and missile launcher. I camp in cover (giving them stealth if I have the points) and hold a flank while my blobs sit in the centre/hold the objectives.

I voted for "other heavy weapon" because what I usually take Demolitions for my vet squads. Since they're usually in the front lines when their vehicles get popped, I like the extra assurance against vehicles that 9 meltabombs +1 demo charge can bring. Even if you aren't worried so much about vehicles, the demo charge can thin out just about any type of infantry in a pinch, if necessary.

I go for X3 plasma+ plasma pistol.
If I want Heavy weapons I'll place them in HWS, or gunboat some guardsmen, as far as Im concerned the vets belong in a Chimera, even if defensive you can ride up to meet the attackers head on, disembark and rapid fire till death. Theirs or the enemies.
I'd ignore the vox personally, seems a waste.

I have to disagree wholeheartedly with the last part. I have failed an unbelievable amount of orders with my gak rolls. The reroll has been pivotal on more than a few occasions. I wouldn't put voxes with the melta vets, as they should be too far up to benefit... But the plasma vets, that isn't necessarily the case.
