How many squads of scoring units in general should an all-comers list include? Like in a 2000pt. list? I use usually take four ten man squads and it seems to work (BA) but I was wondering as a rule of thumb percentage-wise what one should take? Thanks!

I think the general 'rule of thumb' is to have a troops choice at every 500 pts. So from 500-1000 it's 2, 1500 it's 3, and 2000 it's four.

Of course, that's augmented sometimes by your HQ choices. Codex Marines can use Pedro Kantor to make Sternguard squads scoring. So that means you could take 2 Tac squads at minimal points, then go nuts with 3 Sternguard squads in drop pods or rhinos or whatever.

Actually, I was going to post a question on an original thread, but it seems like a good idea to place it in here. Dark Eldar and Troops - how many? at 1500 pts, should they break the 500 pts rule, due to the fact that you have so many choices (Warriors, Wyches, Wracks, Hellions)?

behind you!

I start with 4 baseline too. in the process of making the list it might go up or down but I assume 4 to begin with.

1 per 500pts if a good guideline, but obviously you should adjust up and down a bit depending on your army and how fragile you are. If you aren't fully mech then you likely need more, as outside of a transport scoring units tend to be more vulnerable. Marines rarely take more than 3 Tactical Squads because you can combat squad, actually giving you 6 scoring units. On the other hand pretty much all pre 5th edition codices have fairly weak and overpriced troops, which means armies like Eldar often try and get away with only 3 scoring options at 2000pts because otherwise they won't have enough damage output.

I am an avid user of combat squads when it comes to holding points, so I only take 2 tactical marines and do that to get my 4 scoring units at 2K.

Allows me to dump more points into killier things, like Vindicators and Speeders.

for BA, you guys really don't get that, I think. If you are wanting to reduce on points dumped into your troops, then take 5 man units instead.

As a mech vet and power blob guard player, I tend to bring four troop choices at 1500, five at 2000, and the full six for 2500. For marines, I could see a troop choice for every 500 points, especially with combat squading. Depends on the army really, some armies rely more on the toys, while others have great troop choices, like Space Wolves.

Assault squads are such a great overall unit BA can get away with dumping half of their armies points into troops. In the 2k range Mech BA seem to do ok with 6 assault squads in razorbacks, and DOA BA are still competitive with 40-50 assault marines. It's very hard for ba to overspend on troops.

Chaos isn’t a pit. Chaos is a ladder. Many who try to climb it fail, and never get to try again. The fall breaks them. And some are given a chance to climb, but refuse. They cling to the realm, or love, or the gods…illusions. Only the ladder is real. The climb is all there is, but they’ll never know this. Not until it’s too late.

This is more than likely the truth lol

Why tac squads?

I think if you have three full squads that should be enough. Protect them and focus on destroying all the opponent's scoring units in objective based missions.

They just seem to work better for me honestly, and i dont mind paying the full 50pts. for fast rhinos. Sometimes i move the rhinos forwards and dump the tacs in cover and just fire away. I lose more marines in assaults to power weapons then some special weapons while im in cover. Weird I know, but it works for me!I only give my sgt. a chainsword and take a melta in each squad too.

This is very true as an Eldar player I can get away with one troop choice per 750pts just because I have to so I have more points for more units with higher damage outputs

whats a good chaos unit to use besides, plague marines (gods of camping the capture zones). I dont want to spend that many points on my scroing units, so im deciding between chaos spacemarines or lesser summoned demons. I'm leaning tword the lesser demons but is it worth jsut spending the 2 extra points per unit to have the armor save instead and a gun?

Im not a chaos player and dont know much about lesser deamons...but by the way youre making it sound yes its worth the extra 2 pts...you get to shoot which gives you a chance to wound them as they close and you get armor which is useful if the objective is in the open, or if in cover you dont have to worry about MOST guns that ignore cover (as an ork player i find weapons that ignore cover highly annoying!)

well the better part about the lesser demons is they have a 5+ invunerable save, and 2 attacks in melee instead of 1
