Subject: shooting at the "wrong" facing of a tank?

Let's say that you have a unit that is shooting at a tank. The unit is clearly in the tanks front arc, and its line of sight to said arc is unimpeded. The unit can also see the side of the vehicle. Can the unit elect to shoot at the side armor of the vehicle, giving the tank a 3+ cover save, or does it have to shoot at the front armor?

As per the 'Vehicle Facing and Armour Values' rules on page 60, it makes no difference which side you want to shoot at. You use the armour value for the facing the model is in, unless it is completely obscured.

Not much more to add, other than if you have a split in your unit.
If the unit is so big that it covers two facings, you use the facing in which the majority of your unit is in.

1. You always shoot the facing you are in, no matter what else you can see, unless;
2. if the facing you are in is entirely obscured you can then shoot at another save, with the 3+ cover save.

No, each model will fire at the facing it is in. Page 60, main rulebook.
"If a unit has firing models in two different facings of a target vehicle (some models in the front and some in the side, for example), shots are resolved separately for the two facings."

Hmmm, glad I read this.
We had always just gone with what the was majority of the seen facing. If it was 50/50 we roled 4 up for the front facing.

Okay, see, this is what I thought the rule was, but I couldn't actually find it on the spot. My opponent informed me that if I was going to be "bitchy" about it, that he'd just shoot at the front armor.
Nice to know that I'm vindicated in my decision to stick by what I thought the rule was.
