Subject: Dark Angels, but not their codex?

Okay so here is the issue. I play BA. But I really don't like the whole red marine look at all. So I started painting everything in DA style, logos and all. The problem with that is that wherever I go to play someone will always say. "Hey you playing DA?" and the answer will always be "Nah, BA.". It wouldn't matter if it was BA, or SW or whatever. It would always happen. The problem is, I actually love how DA looks. But I don't want to play an outdated codex as my close group of friends run very competitive lists/armies. Id even get an actual Mephiston model and Baal Preds too. Just not in BA colors
Basically I just want opinions. How much of an issue is this with people you play with? Also, when my army is fully painted/done id love to try a tournament, would I not be allowed to compete because my army is painted all DA but is ran a different marine chapter?

I think it's fine. I would have no problems with it. I've seen people use space wolves as a luna wolves CSM army, so yeah.
Just make them look really good

I thinnk it should be fine. Most people understand that the DA codex leaves a few things to be desired.
Using Logan Grimmnar and the SW 'dex to make Death Wing is certainly acceptable, as is using the Vanilla 'dex for Raven Wing and other DA armies. I'm not so sure about the BA codex, as the Red Thirst seems to be the complete opposite of the DA fighting style.

I think people would be slightly less confused if you used the standard marine codex.

I cant disagree with that, because its true. But thats where my issue comes from. I dont want to be 'that guy' with the painted DA army and playing them as BA. But im in a pickle! I love DA colors and logo/symbols. But I love how BA plays...

What colour you paint your models has zero in-game effect.
Use whatever codex you like.

I'm doing, in essence, the same thing; using Codex: Dark Angels for an Imperial Fists Army.
There's no rule to say what Codex you have to use; go for it.

It should be fine I agree. As long as its obvious what counts for what to your opponent a counts as army tends to be fine. Especially if modelled well.

I think the OP is more afraid of the associated stigma of using the BA codex for another chapter. There's no way around that, BA is one of the two latest craze and almost anyone using a "count as" army for them will get this, especially the DA since they're so woefully out of date it's pointless to play the codex anymore. If you can, use the Vanilla SM codex. At least people have less reason to call cheese on you for that one. If you really want to use the BA codex with Dark Angels, then just weather the complaints until DA get their dex.

You nailed it on the head pretty much. I guess theres no way around it. Even with the BA bandwagon going around, id imagine it would still be the same if I used them as regular SM's. I think this happens more often than not. Ive read tourny battle reports and have seen many times one of the armies is painted whatever style, but his being played as Salamanders, Space Wolves ect ect.. So I assume its a common thing then? I guess it makes me feel better if its more common
It should be fine I agree. As long as its obvious what counts for what to your opponent a counts as army tends to be fine. Especially if modelled well.
I think this can help with some of it. If you see a badass army on the table, you think "Damn that army looks cool." And what army it is actually doesnt matter much at that point since its still space marines.

I have no problem with it whatsoever (provided you tell me that it's BA first)
I am going to start a WIP raven guard army using the BA codex.

great modelling and/or paintjob might give you a free pass to using the BA list, since if you have a really stunning army then people will know that you poured your heart and soul into it, and didnt jump on a bandwagon by spending a few extra bucks on Ebay.

The color of your models and their appearance should mean diddly squat to an opponent in a game. If your opponent wants you to play by specific army colors, get new opponents. I myself use Dark Angels veterans to represent my sternguard because I love the idea of flowing robes for my sternguard models, but I still model them with the correct weapons-as long as all weapons and wargear are correct, nobody should give you any grief. If they do, don't play with them.

I don't even think the OP is a DA fan. He is a BA fan but prefers the look and style of DA and thats it. If I read him correctly, he loves the BA fluff, and dex, but doesn't care for the DA fluff or dex just the look.
Just explain to your opponents, that you don't care for DA, you don't care for their fluff, you just like their look and colour scheme. You love BA fluff and dex, you just don't care for their look. Simple as that, any one who can't accept that, is an ass.
Your minis, make them how they appeal to YOU and NO ONE else.

Not a problem to me or anyone at my store. I usually will get the "Hey, you play Black Templars?" unpacking my minis due to having a black armored chapter but they are in fact and play as Dark Angels. Heck, in friendly play we've had a army of marines stand in for daemons. No problems with any of the groups i play in at all. Tournaments, at least with these groups, it also wouldn't be too much of a problem, but if you go any higher then it might become an issue.

I dont think there is anything wrong with it. Some prefer the style and tactics of 1 chapter over another. As long as everything is legal it would be fine.

I'm not going to stop you from playing the codex, because it doesn't really matter what color the marines are that I'm blowing up. Hell, I'm just happy to face a painted force.
I won't give you any fluff points at all though for using BA-only stuff like Baal predators. -insert DA psyker- counts-as-Mephiston is fine, but when you start sticking Death Company and unique vehicle variants in there, you've failed the fluff test.
TLDR: I'll play you, but I won't respect you.
