Last night/very early this morning, my friend and I were playing a friendly game.

Both of us are pretty new to 5th edition.

Everything was going well, and we were able to figure out all the rules with the BRB. Then I charged a unit of Chaos Terminators with two units of 3 Kans and a unit of 30 Slugga Boys. Going in initiative order his Chaos lord got to attack first. He ended up with 5 wounds against the average toughness of 4. The question is, how do we work out wound allocation with the walkers in there mucking it all up.

It would depend entirely if the lord was directing his attacks on the squad of boyz or on the walkers. (Or indeed splitting his attacks)

Ok, so you do get to say who you are attacking? Does he have to be in base contact with what he chooses, or can he just be involved in the combat with them?

We were both assuming that we were playing this wrong, at 2:00 am the BRB can be confusing.

What if he did split his attacks?

beings there are 2 units, the Lord can direct his attacks if he's in base to base with both squads. If he's only BtB with one squad his attacks go there. the avg toughness doesn't matter cuz the walkers have armor value ntm it's a diferent squad

As above.

The Lord is an IC and therefore, in combat, is a separate unit (see ICs in Assault, page 49 from memory) - meaning he has to be in btb with a unit if he wants to attack that unit.

There is no wound allocation *between* units, nor average toughness. So if he (stupidly, at best S5) attacks the Kans AND the boyz he would work out to-wound/to-armour-penetrate based on each wound seperately.
