I found a 4x8 piece of plywood in the garage, and got some sand, spraypaint and a few cans of that spray on snow and went crazy.

What do you think, Dakka?

Hello,
Well I would say clear coat the hell out of it, to keep the snow on it, you cant beat the price I am working on one for the store out of MDF base and r-5, two layers, and using the negitive to make random terrain. However good job, and I had never thought of using the spray snow (insert idea steaking here)

Regards,
Carl

No, spraying three colors on your minis does not count as painted! 5k+

I'd use brush on Estapol matt down here in Oz (clear matt polyurethane varnish). Just do it outdoors or in a well ventilated space as it does tend to stink a lot.
Not sure what you northern ex-colonials get to use.

I'm sure I could find some polyurethane varnish somewhere. That's the right stuff then?

Wow, you're going about it the long, tough way.

I went to Home Depot and bought the 3/4 inch plywood. 6x4 foot and they sliced it in two, 3x4 sections which are easy to handle when not in use.

Then I bought (cheap) three 8x5 foot-ish felt sheets from Joan's fabric store, one green, black and tan. <-- all that stuff for under $20 and no paint involved.

Still, your table looks good, but I'd pony up for the felt cloths so you don't get sick of white/snow.

I would probably use some watered down wood glue first if you put any sand down on the table. After two coats of a 1:1 mix, nothing will come off that table. Then You can always seal the paint job either via Minwax Polyshade/Vanish, although it may leave a shine to the table, to which you can use some Matt Varnish to flat out.

multiple thin coats of polyurathane, let it dry according to can directions, if you do it right, polyurathane can be really really hard...almost like clear steel if you want to hide all sheen, do varying layers of gloss and matte poly...thats what i do for my minis, the poly i use is so hard i took a file to my model and it took a good 8 hard strokes before i started removing paint...

What's a good brand of polyurethane for this sort of thing? Is this something they'd have at Lowes or Home Depot?

Yes, Minwax is a great company, and it is very cheap too. You just need to see what shade/coloring you get. I generally get chestnut for a light brown wash to my models. Although they have many different shades. You can also get Ebony, and I believe a clear/white shade as well. It is generally very cheap and very effective.

Test your varnish on a separate, throwaway bit of spray on snow painted card.

Some varnishes will dissolve the snow effect.

Looks pretty nice to me.

A buddy of mine made a very similar table a few years but his was sand(painted white) instead of snow. Either way, he bought a big ol jug of elmers glue. I dont remember exactly what type it aws, but I do remember it wasnt wood glue, as the color of it would of ruined the color the table was. It was white though, and he just sprayed it and sprayed it and sprayed it. Took a couple weeks to get all the coats on there, but Im tellin ya, it was a damn rock when it was done and fully dry. Just a thought. It dries clear, and has a matte finish all its own

Wood Glue, Elmer's brand atleast, watered down 1:1 does not change the color of the table.

I put some sand and glue down on it and spraypainted that as well, and then sprayed the snow over it to color it some more and give it a bit more texture.

And wait, he sprayed Elmers glue all over the table? How? I'm not following that last bit.

This is a good idea. I sprayed the table down with that 3M adhesive and that didn't melt anything, so maybe I'll be okay. I'll be doing a test spot for sure though.

They have it for 1.25USD at Walmart. I'd actually suggest trying to find some higher quality stuff though, as this took forever to dry and a lot of work to make look decent.

It also ate a lot of the foliage off of my GW trees. I had to douse them in PVA and roll them in some actual snow flocking to make them look decent after that fiasco.

Yea, generally you want it to have the consistency of milk almost, so 1:1 is generally what works for me. If I could snap a few photos of my table I will to show you.

Home Depot carries MinWax.

A word of caution, however: depending on what state you live in, you may get different products. California has outlawed oil-based Polyurethane and the "oil-modified" water-based stuff is nowhere near as good - it's like comparing maple syrup with skimmed milk.

The water based stuff needs many more coats than the oil-based, although admittedly, it doesn't smell or want to explode like the oil-based.

Thanks for the heads-up.

I think a couple of coats will be fine. I'm not really going for "bulletproof" I just want the sand to stay on for a while.
