I'm looking at scratch building some Thunder Wolf Cavalry and I'm trying to figure out what bases to use for them. It says in the codex that they are cavalry and that would make me think they belong on a cavalry or bike base. But most of the scratch builds I've seen use the 60mm bases that Canis comes on. Is it personal preference or is there some thing in the rules that I'm missing?

I've only ever seen them on the round ones myself, until an actual model comes out ... go for something that looks appropriate

I'd like to place them on round bases but I would also rather not have to redo them when the models come out.

Seeing how Canis is the only model on a Thunderwolf and he has a 60 mm, I'd say go with that size base. It's the logical choice, and I know there is a third party gaming company that makes Thunderwolves (don't remember the name, sorry) but they use the 60mm bases.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

Due to work, I can usually only ship any sales or trades out on Saturday morning. Please trade/purchase with this in mind.

I dont think you will find the bases you need in the 40k realm...because your basic choices are either a 60mm base that would look ridiculously oversized or a Term sized base that would most likely be too small. I would recommend looking into the Fantasy and LOTR minis to find the base your looking for. Im not sure what size the bases are that the calvary for LOTR is mounted on, but that seems like it would be about right. best of luck!

I suspect, given that Canis is a special character, his wolf is a bit bigger than the regular ones will be. Of course, that doesn't really help us decide what base Twolves ought to be on.

My money would be on bike bases or 40mm.

Given the classification of "Cavalry", it should be on either the bike base or the WHFB rectangular cavalry bases. The large 60mm seems to imply the wolves are bigger than SM attack bikes and Dreadnoughts, who they themselves are apparently larger than most modern day sedans.

Can't agree with mecha this time for the fact the only model on a wolf isnt on those bases.

The tournament I am running actually addresses this. We require they use the 60mm base. The reason is that Canis is on a 60mm base & he is currently the only model mounted on a thunderwolf so we have nothing else to reference.

Trade rules: lower rep trades ships 1st. - I ship within 2 business days, if it will be longer I will contact you & explain. - I will NOT lie on customs forms, it's a felony, do not ask me to mark sales as "gifts". Free shipping applies to contiguous US states.

Thanks everybody, its been helpful. I think I'm going to run with a 60mm base and if it changes I'll just have to rebase them.

Technically it's the only 40k model on a wolf, and his base size is debatable due to both his fluff and his own special ability (it'd probably be never used if he was on a 40mm or a cavalry base). Every other wolf rider in the GW range and indeed every other wolf is on a cavalry base.

Use Canis' base size, since he's on one too. IE - dreadnought base.

In other words, go buy the plastic bloodcrushers and put Space Marines on them. Make me jealous and want to start a counts-as Khorne army.

I use Cav bases, myself - to me, it makes sense that a cavalry unit would go on a cavalry base, no?

Well, that and my Twolves all came on cavalry bases, so I didn't have a choice (3 from Heroscape, 1 from Paulson games).

Well that has pretty much summed up what I've been up to the past month or so.
