I play Necrons and Dark Eldar and whilst they are entertaining armies, I'm looking for something different, possibly in the middle of the two play styles.

I'm looking for an army that can shoot pretty well and hold it's own in CC.

I like small "elite" armies as they tend to be easy on the bank balance and tend to be a nice size army to quickly get on the battlefield fully painted.

I don't want a mass of transports as that is the majority of armies I see in my local meta.

Can anyone help please???

Eh, Space Marines and their Varients may help. OR you could wait until Aprilish for the Grey Knights/Daemonhunters if your willing, as they will likely be a small hyper-elite force...

+1 Str for like 5 points? To autocannons or assault cannons? Hell yea. Then the Reinforced Aegis upgrade for free AND the ability to ignore stunned shaken.. pretty much for free..
Other Dreadnaughts should just go somewhere and be a toaster.

Mattieu~~~~ It's not that eldar are bad, it's that they require a lot of intergration between units. Also, that doesnt prove anything other than GW has a huge hard-on for marines, and, given the option between making a xeno the best psykers or making a marine the best psyker, they will 9 times out of 10 choose the marine.

One of the Codex chapter SM might work (SW, BA, BT or other). You get some good fluff and some interesting Elites. You also get the benefit of most of the standard SM support units.

If you're looking for balanced it's hard to beat the SM.

Loganwing with Long Fangs and Thunderwolf Cavalries might be up your alley. Honestly no army other than SMs can hold their own in both phases, it's usually one or the other (either on an individual squad basis, or on an army-wide basis).

Hell, I'm not that bothered by the Stormraven. Why? Because, as it stands right now, it's "limited use".When it's shoehorned in to the Codex: Space Marines, then yeah. I'll be irked.

SM or CSM would be your best bet. I'd recommend CSM, but I have a pretty big bias.

If your going SM, probably Templars or Space Puppies.

Go CSM, then you'd have the same armies as me!

Seriusly? The Imperium of Man and Space Marines alike are still rather evil . They wanna kill every living thing in the intire galaxy so only humans remains and we have seen countless of episodes where the Space Marines show off there inner evil but just call it the wrath of the Emperor :/

But anyway Space Marines are maby the way to go for you. But if you like the Aliens species more then Orks can fare well in a Shooting army. A cuple of Lootas, Grots, and Shoota boyz and of course Killa Kans and they fare well in CC .

But man is not made for defeat. A man can be destroyed but not defeated.

I gave orks a thought, but the time I take painting Orks is crazy. One day per Ork to studio standard. It's practically the only thing I can paint really well.

Yeah, I think I'll end up going for a Space Wolves variant chapter.
Seriously liking Arjac Rockfist. He's a great second character. Not sure about Njal. I know he's very good, but at 270 with TDA, I can get a whole unit of Terminators for the same cost.

Wolf Guard for troops of course, all Terminators I think.

Thunderwolves will go in if I have the points.

Long Fangs are a must. Several units as they are my only means of long range FP and anti tank.

Does that seem about right???

I haven't had a marine army since 2nd ed.

Oh and no one is "good" in 40K. There is no black or white, just various shades of grey.
