Most fluff junkies have the names of the primary memorized. But most of these names, Guilliman, Russ, Lion El'Jonson, were names given by mortals.

Is there anything known about what the Emperor would have called the Primarchs had the Scattering never occurred?

Lion El'Jonson would have been named William Riker, as he is Number One

One to guard the hearth
One to watch the distant perimeter
One to control the intelligences

And Russ, Russ was his Executioner.

Might be worth bearing these in mind, seeing as it appears to be becoming more obvious that the Emperor had quite sepcific roles already decided for each of his sons.

The Emperor afterall is just called by his title, he seems to have no real name, I'm thinking he's not the imaginative type.

yeah, I'd get numerically as well. They'd have names like Primus, Segundus, Septimus, etc.

Either that, or names from Old Earth history. Perhaps famous generals or something.

Sanguinius? Because he can fly up and see further than the rest?

Magnus? the distant perimeter being the warp?

I would say Guileman is the distant perimeter because Macragge is next to the edge of current imperial space.

OMG IS PROSPERO BURNS OUT?!?!?! OMGOMGOMG!!!

Sorry. I really want to read that book.

Anyway, while the Emperor could have very well had roles planned for his sons, having identical names as the ones they received, (for example, the Jarl that found Leman Russ as a child specifically named him Leman of the Russ, ) would probably mean a substantial change in the way we view the scattering.

I find it far more likely that the names mentioned in the spoiler are simply so the reader can figure out who's being talked about, and the question raised in this thread is simply something the BL writers have not given thought to, or are not ready to reveal yet. Of course, not having read this glorious tome, I do not know the context of this particular passage.

See,

Spoiler:
I'd put Dorn where you've put Perturabo, with him being the one to watch the fringes. Which could, from location, also perhaps be The Lion. With Alpharius or Corax to be in charge of his intelligences.

I think, with a bit of fudging, you could pretty much make a list here that would be all loyalist or traitor, which strikes me as handy.

In that regard.... Angron and the War Dogs/ World Eaters as another "executioner" style legion then ?

Well then, it seems that emperor only planned on having half the sons he actually had. Interesting...

Major point on who's who in the "Prospero List of Primarch Functions"

Spoiler:
In first heretic Gulliman is stated flat out to be the primarch most similar to the Emperor, and who would be the intended heir of the Imperium should the Emperor himself fall. I take it that He would thus be the heir, and Horus the great general of the armies.
