Authorities say a Baltimore man has been arrested for attempting to blow up a military recruitment center in Catonsville.

A spokeswoman for the U.S. Attorney's Office in Baltimore said the man attempted to detonate what he believed to be a vehicle bomb this morning at the Armed Forces Career center in the 5400 block of Baltimore National Pike.

"There was no danger to the public as the explosives were inert, and the suspect had been carefully monitored by law enforcement for months," the office said in a statement.

WBAL-TV, citing a source, said the man was a U.S. national of Nicaraguan descent and had recently converted to Islam. He was seeking to harm military personnel. The Associated Press first reported the arrest.

There was no evidence that the plot was tied to recent shootings at military recruiting centers in the Washington D.C. area., officials said.

The man, who was not identified, is scheduled to make an initial appearance at 2 p.m. in federal court before U.S. Magistrate Judge James K. Bredar.

An FBI spokesman declined to comment.

The case appeared similar to a recent bomb plot in Portland, Ore. The day after Thanksgiving, a Somali-born teenager was arrested there after using a cell phone to try to detonate what he thought were explosives in a van, authorities said. He thought he was going to bomb a crowded downtown Christmas tree-lighting ceremony.

Like the Baltimore County case, it turned out to be a dummy bomb plot put together by FBI agents. Mohamed Osman Mohamud, 19, was arrested after authorities said he planned the details of the plot, including where to park the van filled with explosives to hurt the most people. Mohamud allegedly believed he was receiving help from a larger ring of jihadists as he communicated with undercover agents.

Hmm, maybe the FBI is setting up these guys on purpose so any wannabe domestic terrorists become distrustful of who they talk to on the internet.

Like Chris Hanson busting pedos.

OMG best new show idea: "To Catch a Terrorist" exact same concept as To Catch a Predator except with terrorists. I'd watch the hell outta that.

Wut, thats dumb. The guy crossed the line from plot to action and as such needs to be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. Whether or not the explosives were inert is moot as the man in question clearly believed that they were NOT inert.

Somewhere in south-central England.

The locations of military recruitment offices are among the government's best kept secrets.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

Single offices in strip malls and in closed down movie gallery locations are in danger everywhere.
