I was reading through the apocolipse rulebook the other day when i saw that you could take any imperial formation as a chaos one. do you think you could do this in normal 40K E.G. traitor Imperial guard, Chaos drop pods?

If you want to make an normal IG army but use models that look renegade then that's fine.

If you want to make a codex Space Marines army and use chaos models, that's fine.

But you can't pull units from other codexes which is what I think you're asking.

Q: Is it in the Chaos Codex for normal play?
A: No.

Q: Is it in the Expansion rulebook for Apocalypse?
A: Yes

To sum it all up, no you can't because it is a rule for Apocalypse and Apocalypse only....and thus cannot be used for normal games of 40k.

Hope this helps! As I am sure the next 50 posts will pretty much say the above in 50 different ways.

No, not at all; unless you are using imperial Armor Books/ Army lists, but then you still aren't exactly using the imperial versions either.

For a drop pod you could use the dread claw, and for Traitor guard you could use the Renegades list found on forge-worlds website here: http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/News/Downloads.html

but then these lists/options require opponents consent(as does playing the game so...)

This is my Rulebook. There are many Like it, but this one is mine. Without me, my rulebook is useless. Without my rulebook, I am useless.
Stop looking for buzz words and start reading the whole sentences.

There was an old army list for Chaos-based IG armies. I can't remember if it was in White Dwarf or some other source. Anyone remember?

You mean LATD?

It was in the Eye Of Terror Codex that was only legal for like a summer. Used to be able to find it on the GW site, though not sure if it's still there.

That isn't LOTD (which is what I was talking about) which is found in the Eye Of Terror Codex. Which is no longer GW legal.

....

You are missing the point.

And before we de-rail this topic in the playability and acceptance of FW in normal games of 40k, I suggest you have a read of this thread:

Yep and you can use that codex with your enemys permision. Which would normaly be expected (because they aren't exactly overpowered are they)?

Correct, you have to get opponent's permission before using any Imperial Armor supplements.

After quickly looking over the "codex", it looks to be pretty fair. The Dreadclaw Assault Pod looks a little weird though, I'm not familiar with rules for Flyers. Their HS section is also a little silly. Turrets, Minefields, Artillery Strikes... They also link to a whole ton of other IA supplements.
