As I've previously mentioned (even I lurk WAAAAYYYY too much) I'm starting Tyranids for Christmas. I've proxied the army with my Chaos and I gotta say, they really are a lot of fun. However; some things piss me off. First of all: Lictors and Deathleaper. They can't assault after they appear on the battlefield. T4, W3, and 5+ armor? Good luck living until next turn, anything in the game should be able to make mince meat out of the squad. Then let's say they DO live. Pheromone Trail. Whoop-dee-frikkin'-doo, I can use them like an Icon and get a bonus to reserve rolls. It's turn 3 at the point anyway (best case scenario), so if I'm playing a reserves list it's pretty much moot point by then anyway as I'll most likely have a Hive Commandeer Tyrant (and why the doesn't stack I don't know). While we're on useless Deep Strike rules, let's look at Trygon hole. Once again, turn 3 at best to come in from there. Why would I bank on DSing a unit without a Mycetic Spore? Then we come to the Mawloc. Why would you ever get cover from Terror from the Deep? That doesn't make sense to me. If that is the case let Death or Glory models take a cover save if they fail to kill a vehicle because it is the same concept: A high speed object colliding with one that isn't moving. Speaking of cover, I agree with the Spirit Leech getting cover saves for wounds. What I don't understand is why it doesn't affect units in transports. For instance, 10 Kabalite Warriors are in a Raider... "The Doom of Malan'tai! Now we're all dead!" "Don't worry bro, as long as we are in this open topped vehicle with total exposure to it, we remain untouched.

Problem, Doom of Malan'tai?

Same with Shadow in the Warp, somehow a vehicle can block out psychic powers. Also, assault grenades on Initiative 1 Carnifex lol. Other than those points I'm totally loving the army, they are so dirty if used correctly AND they lack vehicles <3

Any thoughts on why Games Workshop intentionally screwed us?

If you cause a casualty to a unit in a vehicle, the game explodes.

Thus, in the interest of public safety, and instead of amending rules to resolve the situation, GW has chosen the path of denying that the problem exists and that any rule which could cause the problem to occur can't cause a wound to an embarked model. The only rule that they haven't hit in their exuberance is the Gets Hot! rule, but that's just GW's way.

In addition, the rules don't clearly indicate which portions of an embarked unit are within range of an area effect rule. It would clearly require too much work to come up with a system for determining which portions of the embarked unit are within range of an area effect rule. Thus, "for the sake of simplicity" the non-transitive distance mechanic--the librarian's psychic power affects you because he's within 10", but your psychic power doesn't affect him because he's not within 10", all because of the vehicle.

The fact that these ruling appear to benefit the armies most likely to buy expensive vehicle kits is entirely coincidental. To quote the most recently posted Gav Thorpe interview completely out of context, "Never attribute to malice that which can be attributed to incompetence!"

Gav Thorpe would be the one to say that, keeping in mind my current army is CSM... Sigh Games Workshop, why do you plague me so?

Deathleaper is very survivable if you put him outside of 18 inches (an effective 24 inches) from the enemy. Due to his rule, the opponent can't even declare shots at him unless they're within 18 inches, and even then, unless they're in assault range, it's still a slim change.

Great, the best way to play the "sneaks up behind you assassin monster" is to deploy him far far away from the enemies he fluffwise should be munching

He has fleet, so that 18 inches is nothing to him.

Tyranids are actually the second most screwed army. Imperial guard take the cake for #1 most useless units in the game.

Not to long ago I started a thread on useless Imperial Guard units and most of the other Dakkites agreed with me.

I will admit that Tyranids got the shaft on units that used to be good and are now bad *cough* *cough* *Carnifex* *cough*, but the Trygon, Swarmlord, and Tervigons are all amazing units.

If used correctly Tyranids can be a very scary, and effective army.

Good luck building yours!

This tyranid codex was a huge kick in the jumblies.
Take the most iconic unit in all of Tyranidia, The Carnifex
Replace it with something else, and hike the points on it
Congrats, you have ruined the carnifex... way to go a-hole >_<

S'all fun and games until some no life troll master debates all over your space manz & ruins it for you

Are tyranids no longer the best cc army then?

They most certainly ARE the best close-combat army. In fact, the Tyranid Codex is the most balanced and well-written Codex to date, as they always have been.

The problem is that all the other armies are overpowered. Take the Cheese-sorry, Space Wolves. They are EXTREMELY overpowered, and clearly designed with the express purpose of making sure Tyranid players can't win tournaments.

And the Carnifex is still good.

I suppose the 'Fex-man is good to a certain degree. but it's reeeaally aggravating to pay double points for the base version of what it used to be. Not to mention the poor monster's biomorphs, 25 points for d3 extra attacks at I one? Yaaaaay! After just one you're pushing almost 200 points for something that'll get pounded into the ground by a group of marines.

The poor buggers fight an uphill battle even against GKs. No thoughness or armor upgrades, so it's pretty easy for those shiny tin cans to give them a good stabbing.

I still play 'Nids, and yes they are a very fun army. It's just depressing to see how nerfed they got.
