Had a game with a friend earlier in which a situation occurred....
Had 2 wolf lords, 1 armed with a frost blade, other armed with thunder hammer, charge into a unit of gaunts, after pile in moves were finished the frost weapon lord killed something like 4-5 gaunts, he promptly picked up all of the gaunts in base to base with the thunder hammer lord and stated that the lord with the thunder hammer couldn't attack, after some discussion we decided to go with that.
Now i know its impossible to deny a power fist in a unit its attacks by picking up models in base to base with it but is it possible to deny a slower independent character the same thing?

It's even possible to deny the power fist attacks if they are coming from and IC. IC can only attack what he is in base to base contact with so yes if they pick up the models away from an IC that has a slower I then they don'tget to make there attacks. Thus is the downside to an IC with terrible I.

actually neither of these work, if the model is in btb at the beginning of the assault that's all that matters.

jdj has it correct; Who can fight is worked out at the beginning of combat before any attacks are made, so long as the Unit the slower model was engaged with still exists the slow model can swing on them regardless of who is(or isn't) in Base-to-base with him when his I step comes along.
The T-Hammer lord should have gotten his swings.
For reference BRB Page 35.

4th Edition mentallity. Read your rulebooks people.
Who can fight is worked out at the beginning of combat. If Gaunts were in BtB with the Thunder Hammer Lord at the beginning of combat then he still gets to strike even if your opponent removes the BtB Gaunts. GW's rational for this, which makes sense, is that other Gaunts pile in to get into the fight, or to get closer to whoever is swinging so they get to attack as well.
Yes in 4th Edition he could take models out and deny your Independent Character or even your Power Fist Sergent attacks, NOT ANYMORE.

Both incorrect.
"Working out which models are engaged in combat is done at the start of the fight and will not change until it's end" P35

This was also an absolutely explicit change from 4th to 5th - the designers stated that they HATED the messing around of combat zones that went on in 4th ed, so now its: if you could fight at the start you can fight at the end (well, if theres anyone left to fight.....).
Much much better...

One aside, if your squad charges up to attack, and there is an IC in it, the IC MUST be in BTB to attack. He doesn't benefit form the "within 2 inches" rule that applies to squads normally.

Because of page 49, IC's in assault being "treat(ed) as a seperate unit"
