Hypothetical situation: I assault a fearless unit and get 6 more wounds on their unit than I get. So... they get 6 more... right. But do they take saves or do they just go ahead and remove all 6 of their W1 models off the board? I have only myself played shooting armies so far, so I'm curious if my friends have been doing it right.

Look up page 44 BRB under the 'No Retreat!' section.
The answer is in the 3rd paragraph.

I have found again and again that in encounter actions, the day goes to the side that is the first to plaster its opponent with fire. The man who lies low and awaits developments usually comes off second best. - Erwin Rommel
"For having lived long, I have experienced many instances of being obliged, by better information or fuller consideration, to change opinions, even on important subjects, which I once thought right but found to be otherwise." - Benjamin Franklin

As above.

They are wounds, and you have the oppurtunity to stop them becoming unsaved wounds.
