Decent foreign films?
Ok, sometimes they get it right.

All well worth a watch IMO, but the latter and the premier are both quite "strong" in parts with regards to what they depict.
"City of God" was ace as well, and "The Horde" was kind of fun in a dumb zombie killing way.

A movie that's not played at the cinema or available in blockbusters. I don't personally like the word pretentious just needed a concise term.

Minnesota, land of 10,000 Lakes and 10,000,000,000 Mosquitos
Actually a very interesting movie - I love a good movie about the other side of the law. Wish I could track down Lupin III, though - fantastic anime series, that was.

You can get Castle of Cagliostro on DVD. It was directed by Hayao Miyazaki.

I'd be willing to bet at least 2/3 on your original posts did show in the US. Not in major chains, but in art house theaters that show independent and foreign movies. Though some of the larger chains will have theaters that show them as well. We have one United Artist Theater here that usually has one or two foreign films. I really don't know what to list as the list would be to long and I don't know what I would prune to make it an acceptable length. For modern cinema anything by Wes Anderson, Paul Thomas Anderson, and the brothers Coen are up on top of the list. As for Foreign I guess, just a quick off the top of my head list of recent movies:
Bronson
The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo
Let The Right One In
Ichi the Killer
In the Loop
The Kings Speech
Dirty Pretty Things
A Woman, A Gun, and a Noodle Shop
and of course:
Oh, I lmost forgot one of my favorite recent westerns coming out from Australia:

The majority of the above are all classic examples of foreign cinema and not 'Attempting to impress by affecting greater importance, talent, culture, etc., than is actually possessed'
Change the title to remove the word pretentious, it's some what misleading

Is that the kkk movie? I'm sort of interested but am too white to buy it. If I'm not on a watch list already that could be the final straw.
I don't think Birth of a Nation is on any watch list. Due to it's age and historical significance if it was on a list half of all college students would be flagged.

Nearly anything done by Akira Kurosawa. I also love "Grave of the Fireflies" (an anime flick), and "Girl on the Bridge" (probably my favorite French film).
