well since i dont want my inflitrators running out in the open when i roll a non infiltrator game, I'm thought of taking rhinos for them during a game regaurdless.

but then i got to thinking how good are empty rhinos on the field? I mean with the 2 extra rhinos they would probably get igored since their empty and i could just run them around tank shocking everything.

what do you all think about empty rhinos in a game? how would it benefit a ranged army? how would it benefit a CC army?

or if you think it is just a huge waste why do you think that

Wouldnt they be easy KP for enemies if they sit there in the open? I mean yes if they wreck you could use them as cover. Maybe attempt to tank shock. But if they're not transporting anything for 5/6 of them game its a little bit of a waste (granted you may only need them once)

Rhinos are transports they take a unit from a to b; thats little use in a shooty list. If your talking about scouts have you thought of taking a land speeder storm?

I myself run a close combat army with 2 DPs 3 rhinos full of khorne bezerkers a defiler and 2 squads or infiltrating chosen. I expect them to be too worried about everything else on the field to waste turns shooting at empty rhinos, because the empty rhinos arent going to be any easier to kill than my full rhinos so why go for them? but that's just a CC army

your right it might be useless for a ranged army

Ah Chaos you didn't include an army in the first post (thought you meant SM, SW, ect) ...

... Then empty rhinos are perfectly ok. What you want is to equip each with a havoc Launcher. You have a nice gun platform, when its not being used as a transport.

well i didnt want to make this into a discussion about my army, because i think that would belong in army list section, but anyways yes for a ranged army would it beworth spending the extra points for an empty rhino with like a long range weapon on it, so it can target other units?

and for melee since a rhino is only 35 points it might be worth it to take it as a on the spot tactical cover for your other rhinos moving up. or even maybe another rhino to load your guys in if they destroy your first?

Would five Rhinos work? Yes. In your list? Maybe. Those two rhinos can block LOS to the others (or at least give them a cover save) while popping their smoke. If they get immobilised they can still shoot (making them a much bigger threat then they really are). In other games they could out flank with your chosen.

You beat me to it... I ALWAYS run a rhino in front of my armored column. The rhinos in the back are the ones that get shot at, mainly due to the "oh, its a rhino with nobody in it?"

I'm confused. I know, that's not all that unusual. How do you get an empty Rhino? Aren't they a upgrade to a unit? If all your units are in Rhinos already, where does the extra one come from?

Also, emty Rhinos can block things you do not like.

its empty because the guys it was bought for arn't in it.

Nothing forces you to start in your transport.

the only thing that can't be done is for a unit to be in another units transport at the start of the game.

after the game starts i can put anybody i want in a transport(providing they will fit)

Yes, for my empty rhinos would normally be my deticated transport for my 2 squads of Chosen, but Chosen cant infiltrate with their rhino, so if i still used their rhinos in games i infiltrate them then i would have 2 empty rhinos starting with my army

Well back in 4t ed when you were not required to tell your opponent what was in a given transport, my bud would run 2 empty rhinos as fire magnets. It worked pretty darn well.

This is how I use my chosen with others and their rhinos:

1. in KP missions, either hide the rhinos, or use them as cheap cover for other rhinos and units, or give the Chosen a ride.

2. iIn objecitve missions, use them to contest objectives. Tank shock works well here.

3. In a shooty list, use the rhinos to screen the shooting elements and wall out enemy assaulters. Tank shock works well here.

4. In an assaulty list, use them as a spare set of wheels for zerkers. Also, you can use them to hide your zerkers from shooting.

Down side? They're an easy KP, and cost 35 points (not to bad). If you have the points, take 'em. Oh, and post your list.

That makes sense.
I had it in my head, that you were buying a rhino for a unit and not deploying them in it. That didn't make sense to me. Letting them infiltrate without it makes sense. Thank you.

I get that, I just don't understand why you would do it that way.

there are many reasons for a transport not having guys in it.


prehaps you want to preserve your KPs and so you stick the rhino in reserve so it will spend as much time off table.

prehaps you have a unit that doesn't have a transport option, but could use one.

the unit that purchased the transport isn't using it(infiltrating Chosen)

it is cheap mobile cover and/or a replacement metal box.

I didn't think you could put a transport, without the unit it was bought with, in reserve.

The infiltrating unit can't use the transport I get, the other reasons, don't make any sense to me. If I had a unit that could be in a transport, and I have a transport for it, I'm going to put that unit in the transport. IMO

the transport is it's own unit.


it counts as a KP, it moves and is targeted seperatly from the squad.


The ONLY restriction with transports is that, if its a DT, ONLY the squad that purchased it may start inside it.

A rhino is basically a mobile destructible wall, that can have guys in it.

so if you have a dev squad you can use an empty rhino to cover your devs from enemy fire.
You can use it to obscure advancing APCs with guys in it without wasting smoke launchers too early.
(an empty rhino is basically like the big bulletproof shields policemen use against heavily armed opponents)

Rhinos are a cheap, universal tool that can be used for nearly any battle field role. Again, use them. If running chosen, reffer to my post above.

honestly when i first made this thread I didn't really have the points left in my army to put 2 empty rhinos in it, i was just more curious about what they could be used for, but from all the responses and things i'm hearing about I may actually implement them

It depends on what you and your opponent agree on. There is a paragraph on pg92 of the BRB on this.

Well, you can ceratinly confuse them a bit with switching them around for coverage and protection.

i guess....to bad i customized all my rhinos with different parts... <.<:

Random Aside on cool Rhinos: I saw a guy who ran a Noise Marine army have each of his Rhinos contain a different "band", plus the old NM's with guitars. IIRC he had Van Halen, Motley Crue, etc. Pretty sweet

no nothing like that....but i do have a trogdar rhino.....1 huge flex arm coming out of one of its doors
