My project to produce a skirmish game is still going and i'm getting closer to completing the basic ideas and mechanics. However there isn't much point creating a game no one else will play. So I am starting this thread to see what makes you want to play some skirmish games over others. What is good, and what is bad?

Thanks

I would say, a system that somehow represents the frantic pace of a real skirmish. While I know that will be difficult, I think it needs to be fast playing, with not too much number crunching that will slow the game down.

Realistic ballastc ranges, and a realistic engagement resolution. I always considered the GW engagement mechanics way way unreaslistic, you know, role to hit, score a hit, and then roll to wound, get the wound, and then you roll to save?!? This could be resolved way more streamlined, IMHO, by me rolling to hit, and taking into account all of your armour, speed, and any modifiers in that one roll, and then if I hit, I wound....then you roll to save, you either save or you die!

Just some ideas.

Make the model count lower. And no tanks, except possibly a transport.

I like skirmish games. They have a lot of character.

Samus-
There aren't any proper military vehicles. There may be small civilian vehicles but that is it. This game will be very low model count, between 5-10 is the current plan (but this is obviously depending on how the basic mechanics come out).

Delephont-
So a reactionary system to simulate combat better? This is something that is being considered. While creating something like this and still keeping it ordered is a hard balance to get right.

Anyway thanks, it's always helpful to see other points of view.

I'd like a RPG part in it too. Something like in Necromunda, but modified. You wanted to spend more time in game than number crunching, so I'd advise something simple.

Random events turning up, a booby trap here or there. That kinda stuff would make it more fun to play. But make sure not to make a copy of Necromunda's rules. You'll need to heavily modify it, mind me.

For me the defining factor is the setting and background. I'm willing to deal with clunky mechanics if I enjoy the setting, but I'm not happy to compromise setting in favour of efficient gameplay.

this.

I am working on my own skirmish game, and the first thing I am worying about is the background. I'm working on the background first, then I'll wory about the game mechanics.

Well RP is a big part of it. While it will be balanced I am aiming for a game that is more about playing a story than just beating your opponent.

The background has already been though about thoroughly. It's something I've been wanting to do for a while so the background is quite well developed, this does make it quite a lot easier as I just need to produce some rule that fit the theme.

1) Is it something you like or enjoy?(Sci Fi/Fantasy/Historical and etc)
2) Is it easy to play our favorite army type?
3) Is it half way easy to play and keep track of your group?

As noted by others, vehicles are a unique aspect to skirmish games as you won't have the normal vehicles that a 40K army would have but transports and light armored vehicles would be good.

If you are looking for a sci fi or 40K skirmish check out :
