I was out perusing my local department store, trying to think of a suitable substitute for "snow" flock, when I came across a box of cheap chalk for less than a buck. It then occurred to me that I had never tried chalk as a weathering powder, as I had heard about before.

So my question is this: has anybody successfully used cheap chalk to act as a replacement for snow flocking? I have a new army of soviet-esque guardsmen that could benefit from the addition of a bit of snow to their bases, but with no snow flock myself I am looking for cheap alternatives that I can find in the local department store.

Any other suitable alternatives would be appreciated too!

Hell, I'm not that bothered by the Stormraven. Why? Because, as it stands right now, it's "limited use".When it's shoehorned in to the Codex: Space Marines, then yeah. I'll be irked.

Ah, commonly referred to as "Baking Soda" here in the states? Nice, I have some of that on hand!
(EDIT: Ninja'd by MechaEmperor!)
Any particular method, or should I just go wild and experiment?

Yes but was trying to avoid any confusion
It is more usually just called bicarb here, as distinct from baking powder which is bicarb with other stuff in it and am not entirely sure if it has the same modelling properties.

Go wild!!
nah, just usual flocking technique with PVA glue.
I have used superglue as am not sure how permanent it will be after the PVA has dried.
Obviously water will disolve the bicarb, but this is really useful for removing any excess in the wrong place.
