Elo folks,

Was wondering, specifically for Vanilla and mostly about BA armies,
would a list focused around vanguards work? I am talking the works
3 x 10 vanguards splitting into 6 x 5 all with proper upgrades, maybe some
blood priests dropping after em, some honour guards with melta/plasma/flamers
that sort of thing.

Can you tell me if they re worth it or not? What would they need to work properly and at what points are they viable? How should such lists be played? What should i avoid? Thanks a mil!

Cheers!

No. Vanguard vets are vastly over costed for what they do. They are more useful in a BA list but even then there are much more efficient units. There is too high a chance that they mishap if they want to heroic intervention. Also look up why daemons are bad. Essentially you will be playing an army of daemons that come in piecemeal & give me a few targets to pick from meaning my army will just focus fire & destroy your very expensive, not very useful units.

The theory would be, Honour guards with meltas/plasmas drop in and hit up your big vehicles, Vanguards would scatter 1D6 and its been proven they have a 10% chance of misshap usually, and only a 3% of not making the assault entirely if i recall the math correctly.
To that effect they can charge at the same turn they drop as opposed to demons, considering they got DoA they get to reroll to come 2nd turn which means 75% of your army does arrive, furthermore they can charge at anything from long fangs to IG vets....

There's no denying that Vanguards are very costly for what they do, especially when you consider the fact that you'll have to invest in some weapons if you want them to do more than bully Guard squads.

Don't let that put you off them, though. My 220 point Vanguard squad (2 power weapons and a power fist) regularly butchers other MEQ squads including terminators and with a sucsesful Red Thirst roll, can and does take down deamon princes and can break an IG castle. Running them with Astorath as an HQ can make them quite potent indeed.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Most importantly, they're a fun unit. The dice can betray them, just as they can betray any other unit. But a successful and decisive Heroic Inter vent ion can turn the course of the game and always feels great when it happens.

Well if you play Vanguard nowadays, people would steer you towards the BA dex. Vanilla Vanguard are too costly.

If you wanted to base a list on vanguard, then don't. Base it off Assault Marines and use the vanguard as the elite assault marines.

Well, I played a BA DoA army in an RTT and got 2nd.
I included 3x 5 VVs with power fist.
Two of these units should arrive in turn 2, on average and can be really helpful to silence guns.
