Subject: Challenges when the unit is wiped out

We had a situation come up where the unit champions entered into a challenge and did not inflict any unsaved wounds. The two units subsequently attack and the Chaos Warriors inflict 3 unsaved wounds on the two remaining (non-champion) Lizardmen Cold One Riders.
P102 in the BRB says that for a challenge, "they cannot be attacked by any other model for that round of close combat".
P52 in the BRB states that you use unsaved wounds to calculate combat result.
As a result, I would say the Lizardman Champion lives since the Chaos Champion failed to kill him in CC. However, he should take his break test based on the 3 unsaved wounds inflicted rather than the 2 remaining casualties removed.
Thoughts? Supporting references are always helpful.

If there isnt a model to take the wound then it gets discounted. Since the champ cant take the wound, its ignored.

Please put this on your sig if you know someone, work for someone or are related to someone who suffers from stupidity. Stupidity is real and should be taken seriously. You could be sitting next to a sufferer right now. There is still no known cure for stupidity and sympathy does not help. But we can raise awareness.... 93% won't copy and paste this because they don't know how to copy and paste |

The champ dies. Pg. 102 only prevents attacks being allocated to him. pg. 93 says "Unless a champion is slain by a direct attack, then he must be the last rank and file model to be removed as a casualty. So if a unit of 3 models suffers 3 or more unsaved wounds, the champion is removed as one of the casualties. In essence, wounds inflicted on the unit can overflow onto the champion"

As above. Champion is dead desptie being in a challenge - its one of the negatives to being a champion.
While he cannot attacked, nothing says he cant be wounded.

Cool. That makes sense. What if it was the same situation except with a character instead of a champion? Would that change the result?

Yes as wounds never spill over from the unit to the character and vice versa.

Yep, as above. A character, unlike a champion, cannot be wounded unles attacks are directed at him.

Okay, so in the same example, based on using a character instead of a champion, would he take his break test on the number of unsaved wounds caused or the number of casualties inflicted?

number of casualties.
Extra wounds are never counted unless its overkill in a challenge.

As above.
You dont get "extra" unsaved wounds beyond what the unit actually has.
