So is everybody's theory about how the Tau came to be?

I have heard numerous ones ones about their advent being spurred by warp creatures and such.

Personally I think the Tau are another child race of the old ones.

But I thought the old ones died out long ago? so how could they create another race?

Oh? I never knew that! (i havent read many codices though). If thats true then maby, i mean: The old ones created most of the other races right? Why couldn't they create these?

The Tau, as far as I know, were potentially engineered, if not by the Old Ones with genetic material from across the galaxy. But it doesn't have to just be the Old Ones. THe C'Tan could have done it, as a species with no connection to the Warp would be of great use to them. If the race were to spread far enough and replace Warp sensitive species like Eldar and Humans than the Warp would be weakened, and without Warp powers the species would be defenseless against the C'Tan when the time came for the harvest.

Or, also potentially, the Tau are just a freak of the galaxy, and thanks to the Warp storm screwing up the passage of time seemed to develop unusually fast.

My personal pet theory is that they were initially created by the Old Ones as an attempt to "fix" the Necrontyr's genetic issues, but were put in stasis at the start of the war. The stasis center automatically released them based on some preset criteria.

Alternatively, it took this many generations in laboratory conditions to finally "breed out" the imperfections that were plaguing the Necrontyr, and the lab that was being used had several processes in place to both nurture the nascent race as well as protect it (the starship conveniently crashed on a nearby moon? The warpstorm that just happened to start up to protect them against the Imperium?).

The C'tan could have indeed done it, but the C'tan doing it does not explain the sudden rapid advance of tau technology. Also Imperial documents in the fluff also state evidence of artificial tampering found in the Tau bodies they have captured.

Freak of the universe could work too, but I digress back to the fluffy documents stating the evidence of their artificial tampering.

I think the Tau are a project of the surviving old ones.

The thread title made me think that you had a theroy of the tau drones revolting against the tau ala I robot..

Im of the opinion that no one needs to have engineered the tau. Life itself is pretty random.

The Old Ones seemed to have engineered only psychic races. Then there's the idea in Xenology that the eldar created ethereals.

Honestly I don't think anyone did it. They probably just happened.

The old ones made the the krork and found them too hard to control, so they made the eldar but saw slaanesh coming, so they made humans but we failed as well so in their last ditch attempt to make a perfect race they made a race with almost no psychic potential just in case the C'tan managed to cut off the warp.

A series of small biological steps, in which replicating molecules form larger, more complex structures. Eventually even these structures replicate and adapt into larger more complicated eukaryotic cells. Those cells can specialize into parts (Organs) that serve the overall biological construct, so that the more adaptive/competitive that organism is...the better chance it has to pass it's genes.

The contention is that the genes that get passed on are the ones whose consequences serve their own implicit interests (to continue being replicated), not necessarily those of the organism, much less any larger level. This view explains altruism at the individual level in nature, especially in kin relationships: when an individual sacrifices its own life to protect the lives of kin, it is acting in the interest of its own genes.

Hence, The Greater Good

Or........................the Old Ones influenced their evolution.

Your a horrible human being for posting that.

The Tau as an engineered race. Sounds interesting, would explain the ethereals as the "Master breed" then.
