Is it worth maxing out to the 9 drones for a heavy slot? Other uses?

Considering how much better B-sides and Railheads are? No. They're largely a relic of 4e when the gun-line was reasonably do-able.

5e's Land O' Many Cover Saves means their main attraction, marine armor piercing, is by-passed. 5e is much more transport friendly, and while you're packing tau guns, meaning an earlier end to most enemy transports, the Sniper Drone just doesn't fit. Foot slogger MEq lists are few and far between. *Any* Footslogger list is likely to be horde and 9 shots for one FoC is good, but the Railhead's pie-plate is better.

Lastly, they're stationary and therefore easily caught in h2h. Two turns of fun at most, and then eaten by Drop Pods, infiltrators, most anything in a transport. ork/DE turn 1 fun, etc.

They're also VERY vulnerable to light shooting. One dead drone is a Morale test, and a dead drone controller is a wiped squad. The Stealth Field doesn't improve their durability enough to justify their point cost, much less their opportunity cost of using a Heavy slot.

Trust me, no matter what damage they have the potential to do, single-shot weapons always flatter to deceive in 40k.                                                                                                       Rule #1

I like to imagine the Emperor kills so many Orks that he ends up half buried beneath a pile of corpses, with only his head sticking out. A lone grot stumbles across him, and starts choking him.

Then Horus comes across the lone grot, somehow managing to kill the Emperor, and punts it into space.

Nope. The Tau heavy support slot, at present, is the railgun slot.

The railrifle is not a sniper weapon

I'd take pathfinders with rail rifles personally.

Why? You're paying 10 points to LOSE a markerlight. This just does not make sense to me.
