Boom! Leman Russ Commander

Anyone heard who got it? There was a blurb on tabletopgamingnews.com that said it was a company with no miniatures experience....

Got to agree with the comments, it could be FFG, they've certainly been booming.

I can't read the article (blocked at work) but is it a known company or still just a rumor?
I had kind of assumed Lucasfilm was happy with the status quo of 'Hasbro/WotC has the rights, even if they aren't doing anything with them, so we don't have to police some tiny company.'

Thank God Mongoose didn't get their hands on the license. Automatically Appended Next Post: Just for you Balance: In other A Call to Arms news, I can now report that we did not manage to grab the licence we were chasing for the game – Star Wars. We weren’t really expecting this one to happen (we made a sideways reference to it in the State of the Mongoose), but we got much further along than we thought we would.
The interesting thing is why our negotiations ended – another company beat us to it. We are not going to reveal who this is (you have heard of them), as that is their fanfare to blow. However, I am sure many will find it intriguing that the licence covers card games, RPGs, and… miniatures. Now, the company concerned is not known for its miniatures lines, which will probably put paid to my dream of 28mm multipart/multipose Stormtroopers.

Erm, I hope not. They can write the RPGs but let someone else hand miniatures please!

Actually, FFG's got a pretty good sculpting studio at the moment. See Dust Tactics.

WotC's licence for the miniatures game and RPG lapsed in July.

See Mutant Chronicles or Anima. Or for something contemporary with Dust tactics, see Horus Heresy.
How sure are we that FFg was even responsible for the Dust Tactics miniatures? They also sold Confrontation and At-43 for a while. Automatically Appended Next Post: Also, isn't this Mongoose referring to some other company with "no miniatures experience"? FFG has some experience, almost entirely reflecting poorly upon them, but some experience nonetheless.

I am pretty sure Paolo Parente's modelling team were behind these miniatures and not FFG. Remember the game was already done before FFG got their grubby's all over it. FFG would fit the bill though but if I am honest I would prefer a real minatures expert company. I am glad there is a possibility of new Star Wars minis arriving at some stage, so long as they are better than the sculpts by WOTC (no point buying something that doesn't improve on what is already available). Edit - as an after thought maybe it is FFG and they are going to use Parente's team to model the minis. Now that could be good as the DT minis look very good.
It's funny but after looking at the mechanics for Earth Reborn. These could be an excellent rule set for a Star Wars minis/ RPG crossover game, we shall see.
It may be going against convention but a bet GW could pump out some awesome plastic SW kits. In truth there is no better out there but I can't see this happening.

Thank you. The ACTA rules might have actually worked OK for Star Wars, as long as they got the fighter/capital ship balance right, which I always felt was an issue with the B5 version. They've had some very poor luck with miniatures, though. One issue that ACTA ( B5) had that I have a feeling might have been repeated for Star Wars is that it would have been a 'point' game (as in, the relevant part of the mini is essentially a point in space on the base) but they still would've pushed for big minis for Star Destroyers and such. The early B5 stuff was generally smaller than BFG stuff and it worked well, if only the sculpts had been better.
Here's a pic of some of the B5 minis (most of which were sculpts from Agents of Gaming Mongoose inherited) with a BFG plastic ship:
(The main capital ships are about twice the length of the White Stars, above. The 'Armageddon' class stuff was all ginormous to the point of being annoying. Also, many fo the ships were just plain ugly.)

They likely had nothing to do with the sculpting of Dust Tactics, but were just the distributors.

I'm almost positive that FFG actually has never really done the miniatures themselves. They seem to be more of a distributor than a producer.
But my bet on the company getting the rights?

Osprey Publishing first went out on a limb in October with the release of their "Zombies!: A Hunter's Guide" book.
They had also stated, in a roundabout way, that they started really working and doing the book in July. It could be completely coincidental and not mean anything...or it could have been them showing Lucasfilm(who put the license back on the market in July, even though WOTC's license ended in May) that they don't exclusively need to do historical time periods.

Well, Mongoose did say "a company that has never done miniatures".
Osprey Publishing already has several miniature game titles(which they produce nothing for) under its belt. Two pages worth of 'em in fact.
But remember: I'm spitballing here. Don't get your FFG panties in a bunch because I'm thinking Osprey.

There's a difference between not being know for minis (i.e. not their primary output), and never having done minis before.
