Okay, this is possibly the geekiest thing I've ever done (and I've LARPed!), and clearly shows that I've been spending too much time on the OSR blogs and boards.
It also shows how a song stuck in your head can cause you to do weird things.
So, today in the shower I had Blue Oyster Cult's geek classic, Veteran of the Psychic Wars running through my head. Many of you are already familiar with this song; anyone who's not, it's well worth checking out as a classic example of late 70s, early 80s sci-fi-influenced rock. For extra geek cred, it's featured prominently in the Heavy Metal movie (which is where I first encountered it) and soundtrack, and for super-double-extra geek cred, it was co-written by Michael Moorcock. And it's actually a good, asmospheric song too.
There's an excellent fan-made video on Youtube, splicing various sci-fi and historical images and footage into a mock-historical piece which I find an excellent accompanyment, as well:

Anyway, getting down to the point, my ruminations on the various editions of D&D and this song being stuck in my head immediately got a couple of variant lyrics started in my brain, and I eventually had to finish the sucker. It's not Shakespeare, by any means, but I think it's at least mildly amusing. Hope you enjoy.
Veteran of The Edition Wars
You see me now a veteran of The Edition Wars
I’ve been living on the Internet
Where the winds of flame wars roar
And I tried out the Third Ed
But I'm too old for 4E
All my scars are on the inside
I’m sure that this stuff's not D&D
Don’t let this change go on
It’s time we had a break from it
This new stuff’s not for me
I need undead that can Drain
Make those
PCs feel some pain
Oh, please don’t let this change go on
You ask me why I’m weary; why I can’t play with you
You curse me as a Luddite
Say it’s time I changed and grew
But the War’s still going on dear
And there’s no end that I know
ODD forever!
Did I hear you say that your wand is plus three?!?!
Don’t let this change go on
It’s time we had a break from it!
This new stuff’s not for me
I’ve been statting up a Plane
That will eat my players’ brains
Oh please, don’t let this change go on
You see me now a veteran of The Edition Wars
My spleen is vent at last
My opponents all destroyed
I've demolished their contentions, left them helpless and bereaved
Carpal tunnel’s all I’m made of…
Did I hear you say that this is victory?
Don’t let this change go on
It’s time we had a break from it!
Here comes DCC!
Where the tides of miscasts swell; pull your Wizard into Hell
Oh please, don’t let this change go on
Don’t let this change go on
Don’t let this change go on
