i rexently began a tyranid army and cannot figure out a color scheme that i like what are some open minded ideas for a tyranid hive ???

do not judge what cannot see, hear, or talk... an enemy comes in ever shape and size...

For good results, pick a primary colour and balance that with more muted tones. White/grey skin with a bright carapace always stands out, and doesn't make your models look like they were painted in a whorehouse.

Personally, I always like to see a contrasting theme with Tyranids. Not necessarily bright green and purple but something that will separate the armour plates and carapaces from the skin.

I think the white and purple in the codex looks good....
alot of times color schemes look 1 way in your mind but another on the model when it's painted. I think its important to test it out on just 1 model before doing a squad, or working from a model online. what's nice about working from a model is that you can see how they did what they did and learn new techniques....

I believe it's crucial for a race such as the Tyranids to really capture that animalistic feel; i.e. not making them TOO shiny... I like a semi-dirt look to them.

i was thinking about a navy blue for the skin and something like an ice blue for the carapace

Here is an example of a more natural coloured painting scheme, the official Hive Fleet Ouroboros colours (in a personal interpretation):

See my blog (link in sig) for more pics and info. Generally browse the Dakka or www.coolminiornot.com for ideas.

I think that contrasting colours look good on nids.

By the way, great looking Trygon Prime and paint scheme there, Kroothawk. Especially the way it's half under the sand. Inspirational.

Definately paint up some test minis. one of the reasons I went with the Kraken scheme is that it's very 'easy', in that the primer color (almond) works very well with the wash I was using as does the red carapace, so it actually cuts out a number of steps for me.

You're going to be painting up a fair number of them, so pick a scheme that is going to be easy to do ... over and over and over ..... and over
