So playing Eldar and when they roll leadership for psyker they roll 3d6 take the 2 lowest. Then they get in range of shadow of the warp and still roll 3d6 take the 2 lowest. I say "Hey, you're supposed to take all 3d6" and he says "nope."
What's your take, guys?

Read the FAQ for Eldar or Tyranids (I forget which) on GW's website. It has it.
I believe the rule is to roll 3D6, take the two lowest for the stones, and take the two highest for shadow. So, passing the test is for two lowest, and testing for perils is for 2 highest.
I think. Read the FAQs.

Both happen; He rolls 3d6 and passes or fails on the 2 lowest, but takes a perils on any double 1 or 6 of the 3 dice.
Examples: 1,1,1 Perils(obviously) but pass; 6,1,6 Perils but passes with a "7" for the test.
rolling 3d6 satisfies both rules, taking any double 1 or 6 as perils satisfies Shadow, and only taking the 2 lowest dice for success or failure satisfies the runes.

Actually, the eldar FAQ says that the runes neutralize the shadows of the warp from a Hive Tyrant.
Now one needs to realize that the eldar faq was written before the current nid codex came out, and that the faq doesnt address anything except a hive tyrant's shadows. The tyranid faq only mentions that shadow doesnt affect a psycher who is embarked within a transport, so its no help on the question if the farseer isnt inside a vehicle. So the faqs are only slightly helpful.
Rolling 3d6 and then taking part of them for various parts of the rolls is a common practice, but discussions in the past here on dakka have shown that they arent really supported by the RAW or the faq.

Why does my eldar army run three fire prisms? Because the rules wont let me use four in (regular 40k). |

"taking the test on 3D6" requires you to roll 3 dice, add them up , and compare them to leadership value. That is what "taking a test" entails. So rolling 3 dice and only comparing the value of 2 lowest is breaking this rule.
The two rules dont currently work together, as SitW has changed between editions.

Except it doesnt. It a) was written for the previous version of the SitW rule and b) only applies to HT, no others.

But its still a FAQ that provides a playable answer to the question. As with all FAQ's tho its up to the players as to whether or not they choose to use them.
