The Venomthrope's Spore Cloud (Tyranid Codex p.45)

The Venomthrope and any units friendly within 6" of the unit, can claim a 5+ cover save against any shooting attacks.

In addition, these units count as being armed with defensive grenades...

Rulebook p.63
GRENADES
Against vehicles, grenades have the following armour penetration

Defensive and assault grenades 4+D6

On the face of it, Tyranid units within the influence of the Spore Cloud can attack vehicles with defensive grenades.

Agree or disagree? Please give your reasoning.

Yes they can do so, as it lacks the prohibition that the Daemon units have.

Useful for S3 units...

Absolutely no question. The Venomthropes (and units within 6" of them) count as having defensive grenades and can therefore use them when assaulting a vehicle.

Heheh, well that's probably a given, but considering the time it takes GW to do a FAQ, it'll probably be sometime after 6th edition comes out

Interesting a tactic as it may be, most termagants get adrenal glands from a tervigon, which gives them s4 on the charge. Hormagaunts either pay for personal glands, or simply don't assault vehicles. I can see having the grenades coming in handy once or twice though, thanks to the OP for pointing this out! I can't believe i missed it, lol.

Been out of the game for awhile, trying to find time to get back into it.

Oh no I can totally see getting two lines in a completely different FAQ to 'fix' this.

We actually had a discussion about this last week; specifically Hormagants getting grenades... somehow(the OP in that thread was talking about using them as a spearhead formation) and using its Scytals to re-roll failed to-hits for the grenades. It was later brought up that the only way to get grenades on nids is Venomthrope or afore mentioned Spearhead formation.

End result was yes they can use Venomthrope cloud as Defensive grenades to attack vehicles, and yes Scytals allow the re-roll because Grenade attacks are CC Attacks.

This is my Rulebook. There are many Like it, but this one is mine. Without me, my rulebook is useless. Without my rulebook, I am useless.
Stop looking for buzz words and start reading the whole sentences.

However the attacks are resolved at only 1 per model, rather than 3 if they had the adrenal glands upgrade. While it's possible, it's not efficient.

We are off topic, now, as the point has been confirmed.

Termagants, as noted above, will often have two attacks at S4 from Catalyst, however in cases when for some reason they don't, it is useful to remember the Venomthrope affect.

Locking thread.
