Subject: Tanks - a couple of questions
|
 |
Guard Heavy Weapon Crewman
Somewhere over the South Pacific
|
Hello everyone, I have recently just joined Dakka and, being an IG player, I thought it would be a good idea to start off with a few tough questions regarding tanks. Despite reading vigorously through the big fat rulebook, I cannot for the life of me figure out how some things work
Hope to find some help here!
1. Tank shocks
When you tankshock, you have to move X inches in a straight line and then cannot move at all, not even pivot. Can you tankshock, then spin the turret around and shoot? Assuming that you moved at a speed which allows the vehicle to shoot of course.
If so, can you tankshock one unit and then shoot at another?
Say I have a banewolf (the hellhound with a chem cannon). Not having the 12" added to the flame template, I would have to move forward. Since I'm driving up into someone's face with a fast vehicle, why not tank shock them at the same time? If they do panic, can I shoot at a different unit?
2. Tank shocks and squadrons
Another question about tank shocking. Say that I have 3 tanks in a squadron, and for some reason I decide to tank shock a unit. Does the unit take 3 leadership tests?
3. Shooting at armor not being directly faced at
This is the situation. I have an immobilised leman russ with a destroyed turret and only a hull bolter left. There is only one enemy in range, so I might aswell shoot at it.
It's facing me with an armour of 12, which I cannot even glance. I can, however, draw a line of sight to the side armour of 10. Can I attempt to shoot the side armour granting the enemy a 3+ cover save?
4. Driver stunned & smoke grenades
This ones simple. My vehicle got hit and stunned. Can I pop smoke grenades?
I didn't find anything against it in the big fat rulebook, so it's speculating time! While maneuvering a 50 ton beast is hard when you're stunned, pressing the smoke button shouldn't be a problem. It should be instinctive if you're hit. Heck, maybe the tank itself has is smart enough to have an automatic smoke release system that activates when it gets whalloped.
5. Lumbering Behemoth
A bit embarassed having to ask this
Anyways, no room for error here, so I might aswell.
STATIC LEMAN RUSS: Fires all weapons, sponsons, everything
COMBAT SPEED LR: Fires turret, 1 main weapon and all defensive weapons
CRUISE SPEED LR: ???????

Well the world isn't going to take over its' self now is it? And what kind of achievement will that be without fashionable henchmen? Normally this wouldn't have been a problem, but I had all my fashion designers executed.
Should anyone help design a new flashy uniform, I just might spare you on the day of judgement. MUHAHAHA!

To answer your questions.
1) Yes, assuming you've moved slow enough that you can fire a weapon.
2) If each tank in the squadron tank shocks then yes. However, not every tank has to tank shock. As long as the vehicles stay in conherenecy one can move as far as it likes while the other stands still.
3) No, you must shoot at the facing you're in. If you can't see the facing you're in, but can still somehow see another facing, you can shoot at the other facing, but the oponent gains a 3+ cover save.
4) Yes. The rulebook specifically says smoke can still be launched if the crew is stunned.
5) Cruise Speed is limited to an extra d6, and no weapons other than defensive weapons can be fired.
Hope this helps.

Turning the turret is a part of the shooting process, and is nothing to do with the vehicle's movement (aside from the movement limiting whether or not the vehicle can shoot). So yes, you can turn the turret, and yes, there is no rule that restricts you to firing at the unit you Tank Shocked.
2. Tank shocks and squadrons
Another question about tank shocking. Say that I have 3 tanks in a squadron, and for some reason I decide to tank shock a unit. Does the unit take 3 leadership tests?
Tank Shocking with squadrons is a bit of a grey area, since there were no squadrons of tanks when the rules were written, so they didn't really address it. I would go with a single morale test for simplicity.
3. Shooting at armor not being directly faced at
This is the situation. I have an immobilised leman russ with a destroyed turret and only a hull bolter left. There is only one enemy in range, so I might aswell shoot at it.

The rules for shooting at vehicles base the armour value you need to beat on where the unit is shooting from. The only time you can choose to shoot at a different facing to the one you are in is if the facing you are in is completely obscured.
4. Driver stunned & smoke grenades
This ones simple. My vehicle got hit and stunned. Can I pop smoke grenades?
Yes. Covered in the Smoke Launcher rules on page 62 of the rulebook.

STATIC LEMAN RUSS: Fires all weapons, sponsons, everything
COMBAT SPEED LR: Fires turret, 1 main weapon and all defensive weapons
CRUISE SPEED LR: ???????
Lumbering Behemoth grants no shooting benefit to a Leman Russ moving at Cruising Speed. So it is bound by the usual rule preventing vehicles from firing at Cruising Speed.

Hmmm as for question number 2, Insaniak, wouldn't it work on a per model basis? Because, I mean, it is possible to move a Leman Russ 6" for a tank shock, yet still be within 4" of a second one that did not tank shock. I would say it's dependent on the number of actual tank shocks that are preformed, since it's entirerly possible a unit of 3 tanks will tank shock with one tank, two tanks, or three tanks depending on the situation. In such a scenario, I'd say it'd make more sense to resolve it as 3 seperate tank shock moves instead of just one.

Not correct. You can only fire defensive weapons if you are stationary or move at combat speed. Normal vehicles can't fire anything at cruising speed.

@Chris - wouldn't the entire squad count as having moved, similar to infantry squads? Regardless, I think I would do one.

As far as I can tell, vehicles are moved individually, or at least that's the way I've been playing them.
And yeah, I guess that you can't fire defensive weapons at cruising speed...otherwise my Banewolves would have jsut gotten 10x more awesome, so disregard that/

Psst; Your Bane wolves are Fast; they can fire 1 main and all defensive when moving at cruising speed. They just cannot fire while moving Flat out which is >12"-18".

To determine what armor you can fire at you draw an "X" over the hull of the tank. If 50% or more of your gun(s) is in an armor facing, you shoot at that armor facing. Here's a diagram:
The image on the left shows the "X" that I'm talking about (F = Front, S = Side, R = Rear). The one on the right shows what armor facing you shoot at. If you're in the Green area you fire on front armor, the Yellow area fires on side armor, and the Red area fires on Rear armor.

pinkcarson: you are like 90% correct; Individual models in each facing fire on that facing. That means, in your color coded example, that if you have a Large unit that manages to have models in the Green, one Yellow, and Red zones, that each zone will get shot at by the models in those zones.
In other words if you have 8 models in the Left yellow, and 2 in the Red; the 2 in the red still fire at rear, and the remaining 8 rife at Side armor.

"When a squadron moves, all of it's vehicles move at the same speed (i.e they all move at combat speed, at cruising speed, etc)" P64
So even if one vehicle in a squadron doesn't move it still counts as moving at the same speed as the one that moved.
