Before you start, yes, I know theres plenty of toturials to be found (just be google alone) and such, but I can't seem to find one that fits my needs. I'm painting on somewhat smooth surfaces, but their curving outwards... this is giving me some real trouble with all the techniques I've found so far...

Dry brushing doesnt work... wet blending... is way above my hat.

I'm not looking for something perfect since I'm not all that great a painter.

So any tips, suggestions, or even toturials I might not have known about would be much appreciated.

Keep in mind my painting skills don't go far beyond slapdash ork painting.

This is the best thing I've pretty much made, so please be gentle. XD

Thanks in advance,

Sol

Well thing is, I have yet to ever re-produce a single ork skin colour I've done. I always layer my greens on differntly, or even add some yellow or brown to the mix.(to a max of 4 different colours)

As for shades, all of that is just washes. All I really use is drybrushing and washing.

But honestly, I'm just to lazy to paint, I haven't finished a model for almost a year now...

Also, about that basing, I removed it later on, I did that for a mini of the month thingy over at mini wargaming,(which I won to my suprise), I removed it afterwards because it's just extremely unpractical, no clue where that skull went now that I think about it..

That looks great, considering your attitude towards painting is similar to mine.

Do you know where that skull came from? It looks like it could be a nice piece of scenery.

The thing to remember when painting anything that glows, is that it's not just highlights. There's lowlights as well.

So, first off, start with the basic palette. For lava, you're going to want a couple shades of red - a light one, a bright one, a darker one, and one that's almost black. Then you'll want some orange, some yellow, and some white.

Start with a base of bright red, adding streaks and swirls of the light red, orange and yellow to it. Dry brush some darker red in between the streaks, and put the white in as little dots and lines, highlights. Make sure that the colors are in mostly the proper order - brightest is hottest, darkest is coolest, and you'll not have a white-hot spot right next to a red cool spot.

At the edges, and in little spots on the surface, you put the solidified rock, which is actually the darkest, almost black red. dry-brush the edges a tiny bit, so they sort of 'feather' into the molten stuff.

Check out pics of lava and eruptions for an idea of where you want the different colors, and how they should be shaped.

Skull came from an Anime model thingy.

I just gave it a few drybrushes of greens and greys.

Like Anvildude suggested, a greater range of reds would help I think. It's rather uniform right now.
