So, I was reading the Necron rumor thread and came across this pic by Elmodiddly of his Necrons that got me thinking about starting up a Necron army. I've got some warriors and scarabs that I picked up for free awhile back as a base for the army, I'd just need to expand off of there. The only problem I'm having is how to paint them up. On the one hand, I really like Elmodiddly's look - they look like they're straight from the tombworld - very different from the weathered, battle-damage look I usually prefer on 40k models. But then I got to thinking about how Necrons would look if they had woken up in a WHFB-style Lustrian swamp. The tarnished look could also look really cool on them, too.

Here are Elmodiddly's clean Necrons. I think they look almost surgical sterile, which gives them a creepiness of its own.

And here are Grim.Badger's tarnished Necrons - I could see basing Necrons like these with Catachan jungle sprues and finding some way to model moss or vines or other plant matter hanging off of them. I think this method would also allow me to do more conversions where the models are clawing their way up out of the ground. If I did a Monolith, I'd do it Lustrian-style with lots of old vines and creepers all over it, giving it a decrepit, abandoned look.

So, what are folks thoughts? Which do you think would make for a better theme?

I like the clear crisp surgical necron look much better then the old worn. These guys are made of a living metal and have been held in stasis for millennia, why are they rusting? Though i have seen some worn necron warriors that have looked incredible I prefer to keep mine crisp and clean.

I saw an insane picture of some swampy necrons somewhere on the forums, if you could replicate that the army would look sick!

KRUDD, those ROCK! The monolith is exactly what I was thinking about. The Immortals are more OTT than I was thinking, but, man, do they look good like that! Thanks for posting those up!

To do the swamp theme well will take extreme modeling skills. In general I like a fresher appearance to the Necrons. I agree that they shouldnt look to worn, as they teleport into battle straight from their stasis tombs fresh, repaired and ready to go.

Whats my game?
Warmachine (Cygnar)
10/15mm mecha
Song of Blades & Heroes
Blackwater Gulch
X wing
Open to other games too

Elmodiddly, since you've chimed in on the subject, how did you achieve the effect with the white ceramic? Is it white with a green/blue wash? You mind giving a brief rundown on how you painted them?

Necrons can spend years fighting in terrain which can effect them just like everyone else. And nothing has ever been said about living metal being resistant to corosion, in fact there is cannon about it becomeing rusted or taking on a rust like appearance. Then there is the idea that their tomb was destroyed meaning they have no place to be returned to and so either remain where they are untill another enemy comes or they're picked up by more Necron forces. And stasis is not the same as sterile.

So if you want to have them be worn, rusted, ancient or tattered looking it's perfectly viable and even if it wasen't you can paint your Necrons however you want. I would say the swamp look, matching the above look would be kind of hard but it could still be done. You can have water stains on their legs, get some water effects and put it on their bases with them rising out of it.

I experimented with a few different things first until I got to this colour scheme. Green armour does not work!

Undercoat black. Bubonic brown "bones". I added a couple of drops of snakebite leather to a fresh bottle of white as it was too bright for the first couple I did, to take off the glare. The white was then coated with 'ardcoat. I wanted something fairly simple to do as the thought of painting 40 basic troops even before I got to the Destroyers or Tomb Spyders made me shiver!

Wow, so is the blue-green tint to the white just the lighting and reflection of the green rods and other green-painted areas?

I must admit I am not seeing any blue-green tint on them.

Hm. Must just be my monitor. Thanks for the explanation of the paint job!

Suprisingly I like both, plus I like the swamp ones though I couldn't bear transporting and playing with ones with that much work on them! (especially as people would want to touch [read: break] them all the time)

On a related note, the Lords and Warriors in the book "Nightbringer" are described as having Verdigris on them, plus iirc only the C'Tan and some lords are made from living metal, therefore the others would tarnish/rust/decay between rebuilds.

p.s. this reminds me to get some better pictures done of mine!
