In the new 40K corebook FAQ from GW:

Q: If a model fires a template weapon out of a vehicle, will
the vehicle be hit if it is underneath the template? (p66)
A: No it will not be hit.

Does this apply to turret-mounted ordnance (i.e Leman Russ and variants)? Example: there's a squad of Boyz about an inch away from my demolisher; I fire the cannon and score a direct hit (in which the plate would touch the demolisher as well); does this mean that the demolisher is unaffected? If it is not affected, how does it apply to vehicle squads? If a squad of LRs fires and one of their blasts scatters onto another LR in the squad are they unaffected?

Template weapon refers to the tear drop shape flamer template as opposed to the circular 'blast' markers
And this question in the FAQ refers to a model firing out of a transport, it is not the vehicle itself firing.

So the Demolisher is neither a model firing out of a vehicle, nor is it firing a template.

The question refers to say... a squad of marines firing a flamer from inside their rhino for instance.

No: Blast is NOT a template.

Template is items such as flamers. That's it.

So, when you try to place the Blast, you cannot as it is being placed over a friendly model (the firing model)

If the blast is NOT over a friendly model but scatters onto it, then you would resolve the blast as usual, just affecting the friendly model.

To sum up: Blast /= Template.
