New problem! I was thinking giving each squad 6 combi meltas and 4 combi flamers at 50 points a squad, for a total of 150 points. To consolidate for this, I was thinking of either taking 2 models out of the sternguard (not what I want to do), or taking out a whole sternguard squad and sub a 10 man tac squad and taking the m launchers off the scout squads and subing for snipers. You guys got any better ideas, I hate to take out the sterns, and cant afford to lose any LRs, as they are my only anti-tank as of now, or will the melta freny be enough? Ugh, I just dont know! Help!
-----
Alright, so I spent a ton of money on space marine sternguard, but than I looked at daemonhunters and realized I may have made a HUGE mistake. Here are two lists, the first my list, the second a daemon hunter list, both 1850 points, tell me if there is a way to improve mine to make it better, or if it is inherently worse than the daemonhunter's.

-Space Marines- my squad -
HQ- Pedro Kantor-175
Troops- 2x (4 scout snipers 1 M.launcher)-170
Elites- 2x (10 sternguard)+ 1x (9 sternguard 1seargent with combi melta)-755
Heavy Support- 3x Land Raider-750

-Daemonhunter's- not my squad -
HQ- Hero- Grand Master/ digital weapon- 155
Troops- 3x(10 grey knights)-825
1x(10 Stormtroopers w/2 meltaguns)-120
Heavy Support- 3x Land Raider- 750

So here is my problem, the armies are virtually identicle, yet the sternguard have special ammunition, while the grey knights have storm bolters. Which is better, storm bolters or special ammunition bolters? Here are the stats:
Special ammunition bolter:
24" 4str 5ap Rapid fire/24" 4str 5ap rapid fire *ignores cover*/24" StrX (wounds on 2+) ap5/ 30" str4 ap4 rapid fire/ 18" str4 ap3 rapid fire *gets hot!* Each time a sternguard veteran squad fires, the controlling player may choose whic type of special ammunition is being used.

Storm Bolter:
24" 4str 5ap Assault2

Thank you for your help, I appreciate it, thanks!

Special ammo bolters are far, far better than storm bolters.

Storms are there for pure anti infantry right before assaulting assaults while sterns can be used for anything (MC, MEQs, KFF Orks) and not to mention they can take combis

I say though, a vanilla list with 3 LR seems kind of extreme. LR are very needed for daemonhunters because of the lack of anti tank. For vanilla the primary reason for a raider is for termies and you have no termies. Rather get 3 vindis and get some tac squads to fill the troops

Ok to be quite honest, and this is criticism not an attack, but both lists seem pretty terrible.

Problems with your list-The three LR's are ok, but Scout Squads? I mean really? Get rid of those and put in Tactical marines in squads of 5 in Razorbacks. Second, don't take that many Sternguard. Yeah their pretty cool and decent as attack units but I honestly would take 5, give them combi-Meltas, and put them in a Rhino and use them as Tank Hunting suicide squads. Since you may not have enought for 3 Raiders at this point, cut it down to 2 or even 1 and at least take some TH/SS Terminators. Also, get rid of Pedro, even if your planning on playing Crimson Fists. Take a basic SM CM and put him in the TH/SS Terminators for some added attacks.

Problem with the Daemonhunter List-Ok I don't know if this is your list or if this is someone else's list but I have to say its not that great. Daemonhunter LR Godhand Pattern are pretty terrible. There is a reason we don't see them much anymore. If anything take the 3 LR's out and put the regular troops in Rhino's. Then with the leftover points take a LRC and put Grey Knight Terminators in that with the Grand Master. Honestly though, Grey Knights are a bad army right now. Until they get their new codex they lack Anti-Tank like you wouldn't believe and the LR Godhand doesn't make up for it at all. Their better used as Allies until that rule gets annhilated, and they get a new Codex that makes them finally awesome.

Overall verdict-Stick with your Sternguard and follow above advice!

Really? Awsome, i am so glad, how should I equip sternguard? Are they good against monsterous creatures with spec ammo, or should I sacrifice a LR and the scouts and give em all combi meltas and throw a couple tac squads out there?

They are good against everything with base ammunition except hordes (which is solved by combi flamers) and tanks (which is solved by combi meltas)

I'd say 4 combi meltas and 2 combi flamers in a squad, or you could indeed go all out for full combi madness

So 60-100 points designated to combis? Seems like a waste to me, besides, how would I get it.

How on earth do you equate 60-100 points in combis a waste to give 3 expensive squads the ability to handle ANY threat. Seriously, 4-5 combi meltas will drop almost any tank and a couple of flamers drop hordes well (especially combined with SIA). So incredibly worth it.

Alrigt, what should I sacrifice for combis? And should I sacrafice anything for tact marines, or are the minimal snipers good?

It depends.. while you loose the spec ammo you gain +2S in CC and +1 attack as long as you didnt shoot befor you charged if i remember it right. they always use night fighting rule when shot at too because of the holy light that shines from them.

But yes.. there are no specailty weapons or heavy weapons in the unit.

Well, do you have any Rhino's? You could really use them for either your sternguard or any Tactical Squads you put into the list.

If you spend lots of money into Sternguard, then play like this:

2 Librarians w/ gate

3x 10 Sternguard

2x 10 Tacticals

all in Pods w/ locator beacons.
