I couldn't help noticing that lately there seems to be a lot of space marine codices kicking around, in fact it's almost safe to say that the ratio of power armour to everything else is 1:1.
Not a problem for me. I like converting space marines and the hopes of more plastic kits of these guys is something to really look forward to from a hobby point of view. The problem that comes from so many codices dedicated to these guys is consistency. We've seen it in the new books where writers can't decide how big a land raider is, or a drop pod. Whether it's feasible having a land raider fall from the sky and blow up to lasguns (only when it dies on a deepstrike mishap and something goes horribly wrong, not suggesting for one second that in a real encounter when the land raider is on the table that a lasgun can pop it) instead of the little blighters getting out of the way of falling metal bunker of doom. Most importantly, when certain space marines cannot take similar equipment to other chapters. Except for minor divergences, Blood Angels and Dark Angels are codex chapters. Been in the background to these chapters since I started the hobby. In fact out of all the chapters that need a book to themselves, Space Wolves are the only ones, mostly because their still roughly legion strength and didn't really go for the whole becoming a chapter thing. Everything else could be summed up with either a supplement, like in the days of third edition, not the best option but still, or being written into one big book of space marines where you have special characters that bring their chapters personal traits with them that we all know and love and then you have a section that works similar to the traits back in fourth edition for making your own chapter with its own traits.
Not likely to happen. Not the best plan from a sales point of view.
So in failing that how about having the poor sucker who has to write a book about space marines, write them ALL at the same time, stagger the releases so that the design studio can work on miniatures but basically all the books are done and nothing happens in them that makes you go "why don't we have X in our book?" or "Why don't we have those options in our book for the same unit?"
Again, probably not going to happen but that does make more sense then what is going on at the moment with Storm ravens, Reclussiarchs, more options for assault marines, less options for HQ's and redundant equipment on others. (yes I have a copy of the blood angels codex at hand)
If it wasn't that it would make every other play who didn't play space marines, I would have all the codices interchangeable, just make the units your taking from a different book follow the special rules of parent codex your using eg grey hunters in a space marine army wouldn't have counter attack or acute senses but would have combat tactics.
This idea would also work with Codex: Chaos Space Marines, bringing in a mixture of second edition when you could have a terminator with thunder hammer and storm shield for +50% the cost.
What would you do differently? Other then stop making space marines and have them wiped from existence or some such idea.
