So I bought the Space Marine paint set from Games Workshop and was wondering: what type of units are these?

I'm extremely new and only own the Space Marine Codex in terms of rulebooks and I haven't had a chance to read much of it yet. So I'm sorry if this is an extremely noobish question.

Edit: I'm mainly wondering if minis can serve multiple purposes or something similar. I'm not even sure if my question is worded to get the right results. >_<

They are marines with bolters. They can be any marine with a bolter in the codex. Go nuts.

Columbus, Oh

That means that they could be Tactical brothers, or maybe fill out a squad of Devastators. Not too useful as Assault Marines, though. You also MIGHT be able to bling them up to use as Sternguard.

I guess their main uses would be Tactical or Assault.

Or they are honor guard. Heck, you could even paint one up as your HQ, although it would be a bad idea. Really, its five genereic marines, so you dont need to worry what they are for.

Cant be assault, as an assault squad has a jump pack, bolt pistol and close combat weapon.

Whoops, Tactical or Combat. And I'm guessing you can make any one of them a sergeant? Although in this set I'd make it the one with the insignia on the head. The box is deceptive on that, there's only 1 of them.

Edit: Moved the edit to a new post so it would be noticed. XD

Just a hint, a combat squad is a 10 man tactical squad split in two during deployment. They are really the same thing.

Also another weird thing is two of the boltguns have scopes and two have straps, does that change anything?

No **but** sternguard verterans are known to have 'scopes' and other weapon mods and general bling on their guns (hair trigger, high cap ammo clips, laser sighting, filed firing pins, well oiled guns, nice machine spirit etc) so they could have 'straps and scopes'

I made my sternguard by giving them lots of purity seals and making sure that they all had scopes - in contrast with normal pleb marines who have none :-)

To be honest, they're just one of those 5 man blisters bundled with some paint. Nothing fancy, and no options. If you want my opinion, don't try and make a unit with them. Paint them up, and try out different schemes on them, see if you find any you like.

THat way, when you start buying more models in large quantities, you don't hvae to worry about your first few Marines having the wrong color scheme.

What's nice about them is that they have raised Ultramarine markings.

It's very doubtful I'll be buying mass quatities of units on my budget (less than $70/week) so I'm gonna use anything I can get. I stI'll don't even have the core rulebook. I wish all this stuff was a little cheaper.

Anyway, didn't mean to rant. Point being is I'm using these units. Besides, when I get better I can say the worse looking ones are more experienced.

If you're hardpressed for money, see if you can split a Assault on Black Reach boxset with someone. It comes with a decently competent Marine Force and Ork Force, for MUCH less than their normal costs.

A Tactical Squad costs 42 CAD. A terminator Squad costs 60 CAD, a Dreadnought costs 53 CAD, and a Commander costs 24 CAD if you get the set, but I would count it as 18 CAD due to it's resemblance to Sicarus and the fact that it comes with no additional options (all of this is if you bought it separately as individual sets). Discounting the Captain, this is still roughly 155 dollars worth of Marines for only 108 bucks. The Orks are slightly cheaper at a total of about 140 bucks if you bought them as separate sets because the SM Termies and Dread is overpriced, but nonetheless a good place to start off your force or bolster it. I personally bought 2 of these for my marine army, and my entire Troop Choice selection is filled up with filler AoBR Marines (which look stunning because they have Tactical Squad Moulding on their shoulders).

I'll probably be getting them separate since my friend who's interested in playing doesn't want to play Orks. All I need to start though is 2 troops of 5-10 each and 1 HQ. I can work up from there. Or am I wrong?

You know, I've heard on a podcast that when the host switched to a different phone on AT&T it was like magic. So much so that when he dropped a call from going in a tunnel his wife asked if he switched back to the iPhone.

The overall set is still cheaper than buying the squads individually and you can probably sell the Orks online. Unless you're going for Space Wolves or Blood Angels, Tactical Squads and Melta Dreads will be your bread and butter (they're mine, that's for sure). Terminator Squads too, to a lesser extent.

It's better to have 2 full Tact Squads than one 5 member squad, due to the free equipments you get for having 10 in a squad.

What's your opinion On the price to value of the $100 or so Space Marine Battleforce box?

As far as I can tell, GW is usually pretty good about its Battleforces....they generally are the best deal you can pick up for the army in question. And heck, you'll probably end up using everything in the Marine box, instead of IG where you get a stupid bloody Sentinel..... (they couldn't give us a Chimera WHY!?!?!)

The Citadel Starter Brush is a piece of crap! A ton of the bristles came out in the process of base coating the first marine in black. Then when I decided to give up after feeling like I properly base coated it with the black I flicked it around in the water then cleaned the brush with a tissue...and all the bristles came out...WTF?!

I nervously tested the other brushes I bought and nothing happened, but really? It's so gakky that almost half fell out while painting the first unit then they all pop out? Should I complain at the Games Workshop I bought it at?

Also, for some reason the fine detail brush I got, the bristles aren't tight together in a point at all. Is this normal? Do they form a cohesive point with no loose bristles after I put some paint on it?

That's probably a defective brush, as none of the GW brushes I've ever bought have had that problem. Go complain to them, tell them what happened, and knowing GW they'll replace it for you. If GW does one thing good its customer service for faulty products.
