I know this is an issue raised in the past, but, it just seems product for price, I'm getting....

15 or so pages of adverts [admitently, of GW products.] In which the NEW RELEASES I can stand, and the black library articles.
one or two battle reports.
some modelling articles or painting. [or both...]
the standard bearer article and maybe something like the recent adam troke one.
store and event listings.

I'd like to see WD as more of a way to get tactical advice on ways to do things in game [which do come occasionally, from the delectably poor mind for strategy of jervis johnson]

I suppose I can dream, though I feel this is even less likely then GW having a sale for christmas.

Best bet is to take out a subscription, atleast you save some money. But yeah i do understand having had a subscription since 1992 just how bad it has gotten.
I wish they went back to showcasing armies and showed more painted models, anything apart from the adds

Which they have done, there have been showcases in a fair few of the recent issues, there was a showcase on some dude's ultramarines, some other guy's undead.
So basically, what you've just said is "I wish they went back to doing what they already do".

Hmm... any chance this could have gone into one of the other "White Dwarf is a big pile of arse" threads instead of starting a new one?

There's a very similar discussion a few threads down.

WD has never been worth reading for tactics.

It used to be worth reading for hobby/modelling stuff and there was even a time when it had new rules and similar.

I stopped buying it a few years ago for the very same reason. I noted that my pages of adverts had increased from 13 to a whopping 21 pages!
At that time I was in Kosovo and had only my WD to get me through the day so I was quite annoyed that I had less to read and ponder. I was so grieved I wrote to GW and complained. They did reply, strangely, and commented that it was not 21 pages but 19 pages with 2 double pages spreads. How silly of me!

They then went on to explain that the articles which do make it into the mag are well writen and in the main what the customer wants from such a magazine and WD remains the only dedicated magazine for wargamers. (in other words we are the only choice you have so tough titties, it's either WD or nowt)

Bollocks to them, I thought; nowt it'll be then.

I stopped buying it after that.

If I am not in my room, is it still my room?

They said that?

Hilarious. The only magazine for GW games, maybe. There are several other wargaming magazines.

See issue 333 of Miniature Wargames (that's 27 years).

There are actually less wargaming magazines now.

I really don't know where that was heading. I only told you what they said in the letter. If I could have been arsed to think about it I am sure I could have found more wargames stuff to read but WD was what I was focused upon.

The thing is the internet didn't really exist as a mainstream portal for information so all that Warhammer and 40K users had was WD.

'Eavy Metal Masterclasses, far superior in terms of fewer missed steps than the olden days.

No rules in WD? Just as well, I remember the pissing and moaning about having to lug around copies of WD along with your Rulebook, Armybook, Annuals etc. But of course, GW did what many asked them to (just restrict rules to the rulebook and armybooks) AND THEY WERE WRONG TO DO SO!

Other articles are alright I guess. But hey, here's the thing....it's aimed towards newer, less skilled hobbyists than an old scrote like myself whose learned a lot already, and probably wouldn't learn much more from an article in a magazine. Especially with websites etc in the modern day.

The only direction WD can go from here is up. They are at the bottom now.

Of course, they could start calling it a monthly catalouge and forget being a magazine.

WD has gone the way of most print media. It's sales are low and dropping, so the only option is to cut costs (which effects quality) and to increase ad space.

In a few more years, it will die a quiet death or become a 100% catalog.

Increasing ad space does jack all when you're only advertising your own product. They don't pay themselves for advertising space.

Another White Dwarf is rubbish thread? Well it is rubbish, it has very little worthwhile content. I'd like it to be what it was 15 years ago but the company put that approach behind it a long time ago.

Well it's pointless due to the internet... even their own site for goodness sake. The other day I was in GW and my mum was buying me a voucher for Christmas. She asked me about WD, the dude pushed, so I had to decline them both. I'm not playing fantasy or LoTR at the moment, the 40k stuff was how to make/paint a kabal and I mentioned space marines not DE. Then the apoc formation (I asked were they official... no only if your group agrees...) about if you pay 75pts you get a free shot. Firstly with vindicators this is useless, 2nd I wasn't taking squadrons and thirdly all of it (the painting kabalites) and the apoc formations will be on the website... sure enough there is a kabalite painting article.

It is pointless. They should just scrap it, improve the website, not increase prices, absorb VAT.

WD sucks, there is **no** reason to buy it whatsoever. Nothing profoung, nothing inspiring.

I wish GW would ditch WD altogether, and bring back the awesome black gobbo webzine they had on their site.

Ah yes, the articles that come from White Dwarf, and are paid for in part by sales of White dwarf, will be improved by scrapping White Dwarf.

also, you do realise that they don't have a magic anti-VAT increase wand that means that it costs less to produce the models, so that they can absorb VAT? A LOT of companies are going to be carrying across the VAT increase, just because it is GW doesn't mean that they are doing it of their own volition.

So why spend $11AUD for what is effectively a monthly catalogue... I say more the fool those who pay for it.

Best bet is DONT BUY IT... at all... ever...

So, my recommendation is to give this a miss. Don't touch it. Not with a fork, not with a brush, not on Tuesday, don't touch touch touch. Don't touch it softly, don't touch it hard, don't touch it briefly, don't even touch it with Gillard. Don't touch it, don't even look, don't let Ramsey swear at it, while he cooks. Walk away fast, don't look back, don't touch this madness, your brain will go slack.

White Dwarf content is fine. The price is what sucks.

If you got a free subscription with the purchase of a "Gamer's Edition Rulebook" with dice and templates, it would be fine.

If you got vouchers for some box sets with a subscription, it would be fine.

If you got a subscription free with a ticket to Games Day, it would be fine.

There would have to be a LOT of hobby content for me to be happy with the price. On the other hand, a cheaper price would make me a lot more satisfied with the hobby content.
