Although, I admit, I'm not going to start my second army until I've completed my Tyranid 2500 point army list-And that's going to take a while-I think I should pick it pretty soon.

I was thinking of:

Black Templars (probably).
Dark Angels (probably).
Salamanders Space Marines (possibly).
Word Bearers Chaos Space Marines (possibly).
Dark Eldar (possibly).
Tau (potentially, but not very likely).
Steel Leigon Imperial Guard (potentially, but not very likely).

Squigsquasher, resident ban magnet, White Knight, and general fethwit.

Im biased, but I LOVE templars.

But it really depends on what sort of army you want to go for.

Templars and Dark eldar can have insane close combat builds.

Salamanders, dark eldar, tau and IG can have insane shooty builds.

What's your Nid list like? I usually try to go for polar opposites. I want from black templars to Chaos Daemons. Still have and love my boys in black, but change is good.

Black templars should be seeing a codex update pretty soon, so that won't be a bad choice if you are interested in a HtH focused army.

I'm cautiously optimistic for a release at some point next year.

My Tyranid armies tend to be quite balanced. I favour unsubtle tactics, that is to say, bellowing "CHAAAAAAAAAAAARGE!!!!!!!!!" and then having my units do exactly that.

How about instead of getting two armies in the same game you branch out into a new game?

Depends on your preference. I own many armies but prefer contrast. Bugs- in general- are a CC oriented hoard army. So total contrast would be a quality oriented shooty army. That to me would be eldar, DE, Tau or a shooty marine or CSM or even necrons. If you like hand to hand, BA, SW, BT would be a good alternative. If you really like hoards, orks and demons both fit that bill.

Any suggestions? My suggestion is to buy a WHFB lizard man army.

That being said, 40k is the most popular mini game in most areas. I imagine that he actually want to play games, so that is a limiting factor. Plus there is the fact that he posted in 40k forum, so he might only be interested in 40k for right now for various reasons.

My suggestion is to get an imperial align army now that you have a full sized xeno force. It gives you more flexibility when playing themed games. Depending on how good or bad they turn out, the Grey Knights are getting redone soon IIRC (I've been hearing that they are going to be the most elite force in the game, even more than they are already). There is also the guard, witch hunters, and more marine chapters you can shake a stick at.

If you like subtle tactics Black Templars aren't the way to go. CHARGE!!! is about all they do.

I would say Salamanders or Word Bearers would be your best bet.

Depending on how you build them neither will be super awesome or really bad at anything, so you won't always charge in or hang back and pound them from a far. But there are lots of solid options that with good planning and execution can do really well.

Hmm. Following recent considerations, Tau and IG are out. Tau because, well, as much as I like them, I just don't FEEL them....Sounding slightly creepy there....As for Steel Leigon, the models are difficult to get hold of, and, once again, I still don't quite have that passion for them you need for playing an army.

Salamanders are looking like quite a good bet, as I love the Salamanders, although I have been considering Iron Hands or even Raven Guard. It will still probably be Salamanders though.

Dark Angels I've been considering as for one thing they are EXTREMELY rare. They also have nice models.

Black Templars are looking like quite a good bet, as not only are they quite rare and have nice models, they also sound, gaming-wise, right up my street. My friend said that they're "just like Orks", so I can only assume that they favour the brutal, assault-based tactics I love-despite my firend saying that I don't have the tactical genius to play assault-y lists (and he's probably right).

I was considering Sisters of Battle, but I will only choose them when they get a new Codex and new models.

Word Bearers and Dark Eldar are looking less and less of a choice, for the same reasons as Tau and Imperial Guard.

I was considering doing Blood Angels or Daemons, but my friend does them, alongside his Orks.

As for fluff, I don't really mid, as long as it's not Space Wolves fluff.

It will probably be either Black Templars or Salamanders. Dark ANgels still have a chance. What are Dark Angels like, gaming-wise?

I wouldn't worry too much about it yet... By the time you've finished all your nids, there may be several new codex' out for you to drool over. It's fine making a short list, but that list will change quite regulary

Yeah don't pick the army before you are ready. Making a short list is fine though.

My short list (after C:SM) was Eldar, Dark Eldar and Necrons. DE was getting a revamp when I started looking at a second army, so timing and nice models dictated they be the next!
