Subject: Uncharted Seas vs Dystopian Wars?

Annoyance of Netlings

I've recently discovered both these games and they both look interesting. However, I'm not going to jump into both at the same time (I may eventually play both). So, a question of opinion. Which is the better game? They look very similar (without having access to their rule books) what's different between them?

I think Dystopian Wars has support for land and air units, while Uncharted Seas is primarily sea-based.

Working on someting you'll either love or hate. Hopefully to be revealed by November.
Play the games that make you happy. |

One thing to consider is that, at this point, US is much more fully fleshed-out. A lot of the minis for DW have not been released yet, as the game is so new. If you are looking for a bigger variety of models and factions, US is probably the way to go right now.

True, but the mechanics of DW really show the lessons learned by Spartan in their first two games. I am still desperately seeking a regular DW gaming group in my area but I have to say the book and models have been very impressive.
The theme is fantastic and the addition of land, sea, air and submarines makes the game incredibly versatile!
I will make the disclaimer that I am a confirmed steam punk fanboi however so I am biased.

Also ship miniature quality is improving, early Spartan Games stuff is rather meh, even the firestorm armada stuff which is big and bold is relatively plain comapred to battlefleet gothic.
This cannot be said of Dystopian Wars, look up the manufacturers forums and go to the painting a miodelling section, the close ups on the ships shows incredible detail.
Dystopian Wars is as a good as Forgeworld on one of its a good days. yet noone appears to be complaining about bad casting or flash.

I've run into a little bit of flash and some minor imperfections here and there on my FSA ships, but nothing serious. I definitely agree with you on the improving level of detail on the models, although I think the FA models are a lot more detailed than they tend to get credit for!

Imperium Sky Fortress in-thread review.
My Imperium Sky Fortress arrived today in the post. It was a huge blister. I dont like the idea of bliters packed resin with no foam cushioning, though the seller put the order, one blister in a box of peanut foam. Which is a lot for free shipping and a discounted item. I do think where Spartan saves on packaging others need to pay. At leasst the blister itself was well sealed. I needed a craft knife to cut it open.
The model itself is in few pieces, the main body of the airship the nose of the airship and the flight deck in three large pieces. Then there is a ziplock bag with four metal girder linked the flight deck to the airships girdle. The stand in threre clear plastic pieces and six fighter tokens.
There was very little flash on any of the pieces and the detail is crisp.
The twin flight stands don't fit either the base of the model nor the model, itself , for opposite reasons. The fit on the zeppelin is very loose and the pegs dont fit in the stand at all. Rather this than the other way around, a circular file can widen the holes and the zeppelin can be refitted with putty. Putting a clear base however is not ideal.
Verdict: This model gets a clear A rating from me.
Conclusion. I put my money where my mouth is, I bought a Mega-Bundle from Spartan Games and the other three carriers from Firestorm Games store. Both with free shipping quotes. Firestorm sells Dystopian at the lowest prices I have found, for some reason the FSA carrier is only £9 there.
If anyone wants into this game I suggest buying early, detail this good wont necessarily last with resin molds, and Spartan Games is a young company which until recently sold a lot of underdetailed miniatures in its games (practically the entire Uncharted seas range). They might replace molds fast enough to keep what is almost certainly going to be a top seller, but they might not, so if you want your fleets crisp buy soon from these early batches.

Yeah, that is something I worry about too. However, the D6G interview with Spartan Neil helped lay some of those fears to rest; it really seems to me that if it comes down between quantity or quality, Spartan would rather go the quality route! Only time will tell, though. Also, in the past they have been really good about shipping replacements for anything that is damaged/wrong, although thankfully there seems to be much less of this sort of thing with DW than there was with US/ FA.

Th thing is, everyone in the biz preaches 'quality' and can get away with it because 'quality' is open to interpretation.
resin molds this crisp high quality wont stay so for long and Spartan might not be able to afford a drop in production.
Frankly I am not sure they understand what they have got yet. Firestorm Armada and Uncharted Seas are bit sellers, Dystopian Wars is going to be big. Spartan Games' profile has gone up by leaps and bounds since December.

I had quite a nasty few deformities on one of my EotBS Cruisers unfortunately. Hopefully I'll be able to cover it up somehow, but... damn.

Have you tried contacting Spartan for a replacement? It might take them a while to get it to you, but chances are they will send you a whole new cruiser model to replace the deformed one.
