I a SM Chapter was wiped out to the man, would another Chapter take their Gear if they happened upon it?

Probably depends on who the chapter finding it is, who the chapter that got killed are, how they all died, and what type of equipment they find.

If the chapter whose stuff you found was, say, the Soul Drinkers or Relictors, who are a bit on the dodgy side, you might think twice. Less fear about, say, Sons of Orar gear.

A chapter a bit up its own bum, like the Ultramarines, might be less likely to go for salvage than, say, The Raptors, who understand what it is like to come close to being wiped out.

If they were wiped out by Chaos, other chapters would be a lot less likely to pick it up than if they were wiped out by Orks.

Finally, most chapters could resist the temptation to pick up a few suits of Mark 6 Power Armour, or a couple of Rhinos, but few could resist the temptation to pick up some pre-heresy gear, Land Raiders or Terminator suits.

For a chapter to be wiped out would suggest an event of such magnitude that there would be little left to salvage. In the case of a chapter being wiped out while on campaign then I'd guess the administratum would have a fleet of salvage ships around to the fortress monastery before the last battle brother had hit the ground.

So yes, it depends on the circumstances, there's a piece of fluff that says if a chapter falls below 300 marines then it can mean the survivors get disbanded to help start up fresh chapters (or reinforce others at below strength I should think).

Well I've heard of SM taking the armour of dead ones, as many of them are artificar or difficult to replace.

In a Salamandar story,
Spoiler:
the Marine Malevolent raid a mechanicus ship for armour and weapons because theirs are too old.

In Night Hunter,
Spoiler:
the Night Lords basically fight each other for scraps of armour from fallen enemies or comrades as they are low on supplies.

If it were IoM SM, then I don't believe they would, if an entire chapter was wiped out. They would probs return it at least.

With CSM, more likely they would.

A related question: If a loyalist chapter found something like Terminator Armour or the likes belonging to another, still existing loyalist chapter, but the stash was clearly forgotten, what would they do?

As long as it's used by the servants of the emperor, i figure it's fair game. They probably just repaint it.. Or if they're really goody goody they'll return it. Tbh i don't see why they wouldn't just reuse it for themselves

Again, I expect it depends on who finds it, and who it belongs to. I can't see Minotaurs, Howling Griffons or Marines Errant returning anything to Lamenters, Mantis Warriors or Executioners, but I dare say Ultramarines would hand stuff over to the Sons of Orar, Genesis Chapter, Novamarines, etc...

I still say that it depends on how honourable the chapter is, as well as how well-stocked it is, plus the relationship between the chapters.

from the death watch IA article it says to repaint armour completely would be an offence to the suit's spirit
